26

27 of 37

Method 1 - Consensus

  • Aiming to reach a decision that is acceptable to all group members. It involves open discussion, active participation, and an emphasis on finding common ground.

  • Promoting inclusion (Note: “diversity & inclusion” is popular now!) and encouraging everyone to contribute to the decision-making process.

Method 2 - Voting

  • Decisions are made based on the majority's preference. It is a more efficient approach when time is limited, or consensus cannot be reached.
  • Majority voting ensures that decisions are made promptly, but it may not fully consider, or even exclude, the preferences and concerns of the minority.

Consensus – pros and cons

  • Advantages: this method promotes a sense of ownership and commitment among group members. It ensures that decisions reflect the collective wisdom of the group, and therefore encourages collaboration and cooperation.

  • Disadvantages: the process of reaching consensus can be time-consuming and may require significant effort to address conflicts or differing opinions. It can also be challenging to balance the needs and preferences of all individuals within the group.

Voting – pros and cons

  • Advantages: quick decision making, especially in situations where time is limited, or urgent action is required. It provides a clear outcome and simplifies the decision-making process.

  • Disadvantages: this method may ignore minority opinions, leading to potential dissatisfaction or disengagement. Besides, it is oversimplified, as all nuances or complexities of a problem might not be taken into account.

INTRODUCTION

Examples of method applications

  • Business setting: in a budget meeting, consensus is quite impossible. Therefore, majority voting can be applied so that a decision can be reached in a timely manner.
  • Academic setting: in a foreign language class, in order to choose the best way to translate, for example, a Vietnamese proverb to English, voting can be used among some translated versions by the students.
