Accessibility Features: Voice Typing

Voice typing, editing, and formatting:

Use the mic and enable voice typing in Docs and Slides, to write and edit without a keyboard.

Step 1: Turn on your microphone

To use voice typing or voice commands, your computer microphone needs to be on and working.

Devices and microphones vary, so check your computer manual for instructions. Microphone settings are typically in the System Preferences on a Mac, or the Control Panel on a PC.

How to Correct mistakes while voice typing

  • If you make a mistake while you're typing with your voice, you can move your cursor to the mistake and fix it without turning off the microphone.
  • After you correct the mistake, move the cursor back to where you want to continue.

  • Check that your microphone works.
  • Open a document in Google Docs within Chrome browser.
  • Click Tools, scroll down to Voiced Typing and click

  • Speak clearly, at a normal volume and pace (see below for more information on using punctuation).

Use Google Slides to create, edit, and collaborate on presentations. You can navigate and edit presentations with a screen reader, set a braille display, and present with live captions.

Google Slides Has closed captioning support for students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or ENL. This includes live captioning. (be sure to connect and/or turn on your device microphone).

  • Open Slides and open your presentation
  • In Slides, tap present in the top right corner.

  • As you speak during your presentation, the closed captioning will begin to capture your speech and type it out.

Use Chrome Browser to search the internet and work with web apps. You can use Chrome Browser with a screen reader, set high contrast and custom colors, and zoom in on the page.
