The Bostick & Sullivan Platinum and Palladium
Printing kit contains the following:
25 ml ferric oxalate # 1 solution
25 ml ferric oxalate # 2 (pt or pd) solution (trad kit only)
25 ml Palladium # 3 solution - not in platinum printing kit
10 ml Platinum solution (Plat # 3 in trad kit, 5% Na2
in kit for dig negs, 20% Na2 in the combination kit)
32 oz B & S potassium oxalate developer
250g EDTA clearing agent
250g Sodium Bisulfite (for clearing)
You will also need the following items (not in the B & S kit):
Paper – a good 100% rag art paper with fairly hard surface
A brush or coating rod
A light source – sun or UV CFL bulbs or UV exposure box
A negative as large as the desired image
Bergger Cot 320
Or
Revere Platinum 320
(Cover wt. lb 118)
All the chemicals are assembled and ready to be mixed
Light tight container for Ferric Oxalate (and glove). The other two liquids are not light sensitive
Use only plastic spoons.
Use artist’s tape because the painter’s tape stuck to the Cot 320
< Glass puddle pusher
^ Light tight container for Ferric Oxalate
The mask is only needed
when mixing dry chemicals
UV light box
A paper cutter
A printer to print out
The digital negatives
Material to print negatives on:
Pictorico has notched top right corner. Print on face.
Let dry, and cover with tissue, as it scratch’s easy.
Hi-gloss White Film, Ultra premium OHP Trans Film, and Premium Trans filmPrintable side more glossy. Single sheet feeding recommended.
Use highest output on printer.
On digital negatives with Canon Printer:
Tried first two negs as instructed. Not so good.
For the next 2, I tried adding yellow, -33 blue, in Photoshop, that did not work. Made them dark and flat.
For last 2, I tried with and without Platinum curve from Bostick & Sullivan. and added yellow to the second one.
The one without the curve worked the best. Don’t forget to invert and flip horizontal. cut edge of negs, upper rt.
Put the drops in the shot glass and mix.
Full Print
Neg # 1(was 6, 6, 3, not good)
8 x 10 in
Palladium # 3 Ferric # 1 Na2 5%
20 20 4
(15, 15, 3 was not enough in Aspen trial)
(Also tried 25, 20, 4, and 20,20,6)
Glass rod puddle pusher
Paper towel lining in photo tray (attached with blue tape)
Cot 320 paper before it is covered
Poor chemicals in an even line across the top of the uncoated paper.
Use the puddle pusher to even out the drops along the glass rod.
Then once even, pull across the paper a few times as needed.
You may also go both directions to cover paper fully and evenly.
Mags demoed with the shotglass but I will try with the syringe
to see if it is easier. Only needs to dry a few min. then develop.
Leaving paper over night seemed to alter the tonality.
Make test strips
Note: 5 min. was best time on tests 2,4, 6, 8 min.
20, 20, 4, (increase to 5 for darker?)
1 web site says less Na2 5%, so may experiment more.
More tests:
Momhet 4:40
Rodrigo 4:40
Final Mary 5:00, 4 min.
Final Steve 2.5 min, 2 min.
Put test strips under UV light to expose.
Set timer and turn on and off to keep exact exposure
time
NEG TESTS:
In Lightroom Classic
Neg. 1: Invert Orginial B/W
Neg. 2: + .5 exposure
- 50 contrast
+ 50 Shadows
Indiv adjustments:
Memhet 4:40
Jehad 5:00
Rodrigo 3:30
Paul 5:00
Juli 5:00. (forgot time did like 7-8)
Ron Athey (too light at 4:00)
Carol (too light at 4:00)
New one of me, printed at School, was 4 min. Look on the samples or on the back.
Rinse for 5 min. Then 30 min in archival wash when done.
Air dry face up on rack over night. Can use hair dryer.
Print dryer probably not a good idea.
Flatten in heat press for 10 min.
