ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

(AI)

When a computer mimics human intelligence or behaviour

HOW DOES AI WORK?

AI looks at data from the past

Analyzes the data to find patterns

Uses the patterns to make predictions

MODEL

An AI Model is a program that has been trained using data to recognize patterns and make decisions or predictions. Each AI tool uses an AI model.

DID YOU SPOT THE PATTERN?

Seconds

Meters

One of the ways to look for a pattern is to plot the data on a graph

In AI, when the dots form a straight line, the pattern is called linear regression.

Nbr Seconds = Nbr Meters * 2

REGRESSION HELPS PREDICT HOW MUCH ARCTIC SEA ICE

MELTS FROM ONE MONTH TO THE NEXT

Arctic sea ice expands and thickens in winter and then shrinks and thins in summer. This affects shipping routes as well as the lands and lives of Arctic peoples. What factors might affect how much ice melts?

Factors considered in AI models include

  • Ice thickness
  • Temperature
  • Surface area of the ice

IF I ROLL A DICE 5 TIMES, WHAT NUMBER WILL I ROLL NEXT?

Rolling a dice returns a random number, if you get a pattern it’s just luck

Even AI can’t predict what the next number you roll will be, but it will try

21 of 38

21

HOW DO I KNOW HOW MUCH TO TRUST THE AI?

AI will always make a prediction even if it has trouble finding a pattern

AI tools may return a ‘confidence level’ from 0 (not confident at all) to 100 (very confident) that indicates how confident the AI is in it’s prediction.

I am 23% sure it will roll a 6.

HOW DO YOU TEACH AI TO FIND CATS IN PHOTOS?

You give the AI lots of photos.

You tell the AI which photos have cats.

You tell the AI where the cats are in the photos.

The AI identifies patterns.

For example: Cats are usually furry, with 2 eyes, pointy ears and a tail

When you give the AI a new photo it uses that pattern to find cats.

This is called object detection.

23

IS THERE A CAT IN THIS PHOTO?

To fix it, you would have to retrain your AI using dog photos so the AI can find a new pattern that can distinguish between cats and dogs.

The quantity, variety, and quality of data affects how often an AI is right or wrong.

The dog matches the cat pattern so the AI thinks it found a cat!

WHICH OF THESE PHOTOS CONTAINS A CAT?

  • Would your answer change if you were training the AI to
    • Monitor endangered species visiting a watering hole in Africa?
    • Use city traffic cameras to help find lost pets?
  • Each AI tool is trained for a specific purpose.
  • Before using any AI tool, research what it is designed to do and how it was trained. Use the right tool for the right job!

OBJECT DETECTION IS USED TO TRACK FISH SPECIES

  • The challenge: You can’t know if you have a sustainable fishery if you don’t know how many fish are coming back.
  • The solution: An underwater camera in Indigenous-run fish weir and an AI model identifies 12 different species of fish with 80-90 % accuracy to help track salmon populations.

26

OBJECT DETECTION IS USED TO TRACK BELUGA WHALES

  • AI Image analysis can identify beluga whales with 85-88% accuracy using aerial, drone and satellite imagery.
  • The model can analyze thousands of images in hours, a task that previously took months to complete.

PICK THE BEST AI TOOL FOR EACH JOB

As you can see there are a lot of different types of AI

It’s important to pick the best AI for an individual task to get the best results

WHAT IS GENERATIVE AI?

Term

Definition

GENERATIVE AI

AI that creates new content such as text, image, music, or video. They create content based on patterns in the data used to teach the AI

29 of 38

29

WHICH OF THE EXAMPLES BELOW IS GENERATIVE AI?

Your video app recommends movies

You ask Meta (Facebook) to imagine a photo of a cat riding a flying turtle

You ask ChatGPT to make birthday card greetings for a soccer player

HOW DOES GENERATIVE AI CREATE ORIGINAL TEXT?

Term

Definition

LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS

(LLM)

LLMs analyze vast amounts of data to find patterns so they can generate and respond to human language in a way that mimics natural conversation

31 of 38

DOES GENERATIVE AI MAKE MISTAKES?

If your teacher asked Generative AI to write your report card it might have analyzed report cards in other countries including the United States.

Students in the United States usually have American history as a subject on their report card.

So the generative AI might add American history to your report card, even if you never took that subject.

You should ALWAYS fact check content created by generative AI

AMERICAN HISTORY

YES!

32 of 38

DOES GENERATIVE AI MAKE MISTAKES?

Term

Definition

HALLUCINATION

When AI generates incorrect, fabricated or nonsensical information that appears plausible but is not grounded in reality

33 of 38

33

AI HAS AN IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

  • Training a large language model can consume as much energy as 100 homes consume in a year
  • By 2026, it’s estimated 6% of the total energy consumption in the U.S. will be for AI
  • Fresh water may be pumped in to cool server rooms and pumped back to the stream or lake at a higher temperature

34 of 38

34

DOES THAT MEAN WE SHOULDN’T USE AI?

In fact, there are ways to use AI that help the environment

After a lightning storm you can send drones to fly over forests and use AI to analyze images to locate forest fires and put them out quickly before they spread

NO!

35 of 38

35

BE THOUGHTFUL WHEN YOU USE AI

  • When choosing an AI, look up the sustainability efforts of the provider, are they making efforts to minimize their environmental impact?
  • Wherever possible use an AI designed specifically to do the task you want to accomplish. AIs designed to do specific tasks use less energy e.g. face ID on your phone vs ChatGPT
