100 Mots, Une Histoire

​

Secondary school pupils are invited to submit a complete story of no more than 100 words, in French. Strictly 100 words MAX c’est = 1 il y a = 3 est-ce = 1

​

Looking primarily looking for creativity, imagination and narrative flair, as well as linguistic accuracy. Pupils’ language skills will be considered in the context of their age and year group.

• Years 9-13

​

• There will be a winner and a maximum of two runners up, for each year level and there may be some “highly commended” acknowledgements by our judges. Results as well as the winning, runner up, and highly commended stories will be published and permission to do so is a condition of entry.

• Pupils may only submit one story each

​

We will ask teachers to submit no more than 10 per year level from their school

• The idea is for the students to not be supported by AI, internet etc
• Teacher professional judgement – does this reflect what a Y9 can realistically do?
• No teacher involvement or correction
• Perfection not an expectation – it is not just the language but the ideas
• Single word look up – fine. Nothing more.
• Native speakers – absolutely but will be 1^st in NS category etc – so teachers will have to declare their NS
• Digital submission – scanned PDF, doc, ppt

Foreseen issues?

• Prizes – currently none – it’s the ultimate intrinsic motivator
• We might look at what we can dig up!
• AI / Internet use – teacher professional judgement – do not submit something for judgement that looks dodgy. It will not win ☺

50 words per year level in English and French (perhaps fewer)

Issue list to students

GO through it with them

When ready each class teacher ‘tests’ each pupil.

They have a minute to say and spell as many words correctly as they can. (Teacher has the 50 words IN ENGLISH cut up ready to pick up so each pupil has a random selection each time.

Whoever correctly spells the most words in a minute is the winner

​

The top 2 from each class move on to the next round…

​

Then the finalists (e.g. for SMC it would be 10 at Y7, 4 at Y8, 6 at Y9 and 4 at Y10) go to the finals.

We could then take it regional hahahaha – maybe not this year?

Spelling is French pronunciation with accents spelled also

​

In the case of a tie there will be a cache of 10 words that students will have to spell off the cuff. These would be given in FRENCH but the students have not practised them beforehand

Foreseen issues?

• Prizes – none. This is a within school event

​

• Native Speakers. A separate section if they want to participate and should not be given a word list in advance.
