The Rainbow Bear

In Writing the children will be learning:

  • To draft a 1st person recount (diary entry)
  • To draft an explanation text about Global Warming
  • To draft a newspaper report about polar bears

Reading

Over this half term, the children will be practising a range of reading skills. These include:

  • To be able to retrieve and record information from non-fiction, fiction and poetry.
  • To predict what might happen from details stated or implied, justifying predictions using evidence from the text.
  • To infer a characters’ feelings and thoughts from their actions, justifying inferences with evidence clearly taken from the text.
  • To compare texts to identify similarities and differences.
  • To explain words and phrases within texts to identify their purpose and meaning.

Please remember to read 5 times a week and record it in your child’s reading diary.

Maths

This half term, the children will be learning:

  • Adding and subtracting fractions
  • Multiplying whole numbers by fractions
  • Reading and writing decimals
  • Comparing decimals
  • Writing fractions as decimals
  • Adding and subtracting decimals

Spellings

Following a successful trial in Years 3 & 4, this year we will be implementing a new approach to spelling, building on the phonics already established in KS1. This will be practised in specific sessions during the school day. The spelling rule and sound of the week will be shared on Google Classroom so you can practise with your child at home if you would like to.

Home Learning

Reading - Reading diaries are to be handed in every Friday. morning. Please read with your child at least five times a week.

Century - Complete 30 minutes of Century a week.

Spellings - Practise your spellings for your test on Friday. Overviews can be found under ‘Spring 1 Spelling’ on Google Classroom.

PE

Your child will need the correct P.E kit: red shorts/ black/grey tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirt and trainers/plimsolls.

Please come to school in correct P.E kit on:

  • 5VH outdoor PE Monday & indoor PE Thursday
  • 5JH outdoor PE Monday & indoor PE Thursday
  • 5G outdoor PE Friday & indoor PE Wednesday
  • 5M outdoor PE Tuesday & indoor PE Wednesday

How You Can Help Your Child at Home

The children also have access to a number of resources online.

These include:

  • Polypad - A useful resource for pictorial and concrete representations of Maths.
  • Prodigy English - Create a free account using your Google login. Teachers also have access to the children’s reports and can keep track of how they are doing!

Please ask your child’s class teacher if you are having trouble accessing any of these.

Reminders

  • Please ensure all clothing is labelled.
  • Please ensure that your child has a water bottle in school every day.
  • Please ensure that your child has a weather appropriate coat.
  • If your child has a packed lunch, please ensure that it is a healthy meal.
  • Snacks can be eaten at break time. These should be fruit, vegetables or cereal bars.

Assessment

At various points throughout the year, your child will be assessed in order to determine the next steps in their learning. This may take a range of forms including termly assessment tests, informal quizzes, listening to reading, independent writing and many more.
