Earning Credits

  • Students take 6 classes total - OHVA board policy
  • Students can earn a ½ credit in each class per semester
      • 3 credits per semester
      • 6 credits per school year
  • In order to earn credit, students must earn a D- (60%) or higher

Grade Promotion/Class Placement

OHVA School Policy

Students move from one grade level to the next grade level at the conclusion of each school year based on the year they enter high school. This does not guarantee that a student will graduate in four years. Students must earn the correct number of credits in the state-required content areas in order to graduate.

On Track Credit Guidelines

  • 10th Graders begin the year with 5 credits or more

  • 11th Graders begin the year with 10 credits or more

  • 12th Graders begin the year with 15 credits or more

Level of Courses

General Courses: Rich and engaging course content, differentiated instruction paths, standards support, and robust data analytics and teacher support to inform instruction.

Honors Level Course: This course demands even greater independence and self-discipline. The course is reading and writing intensive; and text used is typically assigned to college-level courses. Students also demonstrate college level writing in essays.

Please note:

*OHVA honors courses are not weighted. Honors courses are for additional enrichment.

*Each subject area has different requirements to take an Honors level course.

What class should I start in for ELA?

Keep in mind, you must have 4 credits of ELA to graduate from high school.

  • Most students entering 9th grade will be placed in General 9th grade ELA. This course is designed to continue building writing skills from 8th grade to make sure you are successful with high school writing and state competency test.
  • Honors ELA 9 is designed for students who have met the 8th grade ELA standards and are ready to continue building their writing skills.

OHVA HS ELA team will review 8th grade Ohio State Test scores, 8th grade MAP growth, and current ELA grades/engagement to determine honors ELA 9 placement.

Honors ELA 9 Placement

  • Students recommended for Honors ELA 9 Placement will receive an email from high school ELA teachers at the end of May
  • Students who are recommended for Honors ELA but wish to take General ELA 9 instead will need to respond to the email to request a change in placement.
  • If students do not receive an email, they can assume they will be scheduled for General ELA 9.
  • If students are unsure of their ELA placement or have questions or concerns, they can reach out to their 8th grade counselor to discuss their placement.

Typical Pathway for Math

  1. Algebra I (some of you will not be placed in Algebra 1 but follow the Developmental/Continuing Algebra math pathway)
  2. Geometry OR Honors Geometry
  3. Integrated Math III OR Algebra II OR Honors Algebra II OR Probability and Statistics
  4. Practical Math OR Pre-Calculus OR College Credit Plus Math

  • For 8th grade students already in HS Math courses you will follow the pathway above.
  • If you want to take Honors level Math you would need a recommendation from your current Math teacher. Reach out to your current math teacher to discuss. Please remember honors level courses are for enrichment only and are not weighted

What class should I start in for math?

Keep in mind, you must have 4 credits of math to graduate from high school.

  • Most students entering 9th grade will be placed in Developmental Algebra. Developmental Algebra is a two-year Algebra I course. Students will still be learning Algebra I and use an Algebra I book but the class moves at a slower pace.
  • To begin in Algebra I students must be recommended by their current Math 8 teacher.
  • Students will secure this recommendation for Honors Algebra I if they have an 90% or higher in Math 8 AND are attending class/working in the course regularly.
  • Students will secure this recommendation for Algebra I if they have an 80% or higher in Math 8 AND are attending class/working in the course regularly.

Algebra I Placement

  • Students recommended for Algebra I placement will receive an email from their 8th grade counselor notifying them that they were recommended and will be scheduled for Algebra I or Honors Algebra I.
  • Students who are recommended for Honors Algebra I or Algebra I but wish to take regular Algebra I or Developmental Algebra instead will need to respond to the email to request a change in placement.
  • If students do not receive an email, they can assume they will be scheduled for Developmental Algebra.
  • If students are unsure of their math placement or have questions or concerns, they can reach out to their 8th grade counselor during the first week of April to discuss their placement.
  • Please note, if you wish to pursue the academic honors diploma, you must take Algebra I in grade 9.

History Honors Recommendations

-Currently in 8th grade history. Please reach out to your current History 8 teacher to request a recommendation to take Modern World History Honors in 9th grade.

      • If you select honors and you have a teacher recommendation listed, you will be scheduled for honors.
      • If you select honors and do not get a recommendation, you will not be scheduled for honors courses. We will edit your schedule accordingly.

  • Students have a required elective class in their 9th grade schedule

  • These classes are required for graduation

  • Students need a minimum of 5 elective credits to graduate high school

  • Elective choices and course descriptions are listed in Electives Recording document which will be sent in the recording.

  • 9th grade students are required to choose either:

-Two semester electives of their choice

OR

-One year-long world language course

9th Grade Electives:

Semester electives (students choose 2 of the following semester electives):

Students will have the opportunity to pick 2 semester electives in Financial Literacy (grad req), Business Electives, Technology Electives, General Electives, and CTE exploration electives*. The list provided for electives will continue to become larger as you continue your high school journey.

OR:

World Language Elective (students choose 1 of the year-long electives):

  • Spanish

Note:

  • Bus. & Marketing, Healthcare, Ag., Arts and AV & IT can not be selected again IF a student already took this course in 8th grade. Please be sure to choose other electives. High School Counselors will be checking and will select other electives for students if they choose the same CTE electives they already took in 8th grade

World Language-Spanish

  • Yearlong in length (both semester 1 and semester 2)
  • This course is very rigorous
  • World language is not required to graduate
  • At least 2 years of a world language is recommended if you are college-bound
  • OHVA offers Spanish I, II and III

  • Make sure to use the student’s last name and first name on your account. Do not use nicknames
    • On the question that asked for your email, please use your LC email or a personal email address to get a copy of your responses. If you use your OHVA email address you will not get a copy of your response.
    • Please use your student ID number
      • Do not use your family ID number
      • If you do not know your student ID number, check your email. It is in the email for the session reminder.
