Co-Creating sustainable and shared community mobilityNiamh Moore-Cherry, Rachel McArdle, Dean Phelan (UCD), Brian Caulfield, Seyedkeyvan Hosseini (TCD)
The problem:
- Government policy requires 51% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030; a large proportion produced by the transport sector.
- Small towns are a particular challenge as they have a heavy reliance on private, individual mobility, inhibiting livability, economic vitality and development.
Approach:
- Inter-disciplinary, co-creation approach using design thinking, policy analysis and spatial data analysis.
- Societal impact champion: Dr Kieran Harrahill, TASC
Solution:
- Stakeholder engagement identified two issues which will be addressed as follows:
- Awareness / information of existing options - through web-based solution
- Spatial planning issues – through development of community-led mobility strategy
Impact:
- Project directly addresses call for significant cut in transport emissions in the 2023 Climate Action Plan, combining technological and behavioural dimensions.
- Co-creation provides evidence to develop place-based solutions so public and private investment can have real impact
