Task: Analyze and Interpret Hurricane Data using Charts, Graphs, Maps

4 of 7

How do hurricanes form? What does it have to do with the Ocean?

  1. Warm, moist air over the ocean (near the equator) rises upward from near the surface.
  2. Because this air moves up and away from the surface, there is less air left near the surface.
    1. This is an area of lower air pressure.
  3. Air from surrounding areas with higher air pressure pushes in to the low pressure area.
  4. Then that "new" air becomes warm and moist and rises, too.
  5. Tropical cyclones usually weaken when they hit land, because they are no longer being "fed" by the energy from the warm ocean waters.

Task: Analyze and Interpret Hurricane Data using Charts, Maps, graphs

  • Use the link provided on Ms Friedrich’s blog to access monthly/yearly ocean surface temperature data.
    • For each data point you tracked yesterday, record the surface temperature at that location as it appears on the map.
      • How do you zoom in??
    • For each tropical cyclone:
      • Write what you notice about the temperature + track
      • Suggest a scientific reason it followed this track

Thursday Task: Analyze/Interpret Text

  1. Choose 1 article about hurricanes.
  2. Complete a total of 8 annotations using the Annotations handout as a guide.
  3. You may also work on finishing your task from yesterday. See slide 6.
