MAgnets and Temperature

2 of 8

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to determine if temperature affects the force of the magnet.

3 of 8

Hypothesis

I think if the magnet is at a high temperature then the force of the magnet would be weakened.

Materials

3 Magnetic wands

40 Paper Clips

Stove and Pot

Timer

Freezer

Procedure

1.First you get the 40 paper clips and a magnetic wand that is at room temperature. Record how many paper clips the magnet attracts. Repeat 3 times.

2. Place the magnetic wand in the freezer and set the timer for 15 minutes. Once the timer is done, take the wand out and record how many paper clips it attracts. Repeat 3 times.

3. Boil enough water to cover the bottom of the wand. Once the water is boiling place the wand in the pot and let it heat up for 1 minute. Then record how many paper clips attract to the wand. Repeat 3 times.

Conclusion

Heat makes the magnet weaker than the cold magnet. Less paper clips stuck to the magnet when it is hot. More paper clips were attracted to the magnet when it was cold.

Real world COnnection

It is important to know that temperature does affect the magnetism in magnets because if you are using a magnet that is hot it will not attract magnetic things as well as a cold magnet will.
