LEARN/FIND

Discuss and brainstorm special places close to us, special to NZ. Make a list of these places and practice using google maps to get directions to local places that we all know (Te Oro, Pak n Sav, Count Down, GTS etc) Write down why these places are special.

Poem #1 - A list poem�Find buddy school and identify cool names and list. Create a route.

Choose 8 place names and 8 roads. Record on planning sheet. Reorder based on what sounds best (e.g. words that rhyme)

Follow the rest of lesson on ‘APPLY’

In spaces #1-9 write new ordered list of places.

#10-18 newly ordered list of streets��Complete rest of planning sheet.

When finished, use decoder glasses to reveal poem #2

Poem #3 - A poem of metaphors and repetition.

Ask two questions: What is a path/ara to you?

What is a journey/haerenga to you? Give one

Path Slip and one Journey Slip to every student.

Without discussion write a six word answer to

each question on the corresponding slips. Note:

Answers can not include the words ‘A journey/

haerenga is’. Place all Journey Slips in one

container and all Path Slips in another. Students

choose two slips, one of each type and then

stand together in a circle. Students should read

their pair out loud after which everyone should

reply together: “Ara-Path. Journey-Haerenga”.
