MEASURING OPEN SCIENCE

A Metric Where Assessment Meets Excitement

TITLE: KIPIMO, A NEW USABLE METRIC

The Challenge.CHAL

  • We chose Measuring Open science as our challenge.
  • Inspiration: Uganda and other developing countries are still in the infant stages of participation in the global space community. We believe that a New metric will be helpful in gauging how impactful and effective the Open science activities will be.
  • Kipimo is the solution that can solve the challenge by displaying a percentile as a metric while making the feedback acquisition process, from the researchers on open science activities fun and exciting.

  • It accelerates the impact and effectiveness of Open Science activities through awarding exclusive documents and recommending related useful data and results to the researcher.

Kipimo The Solution:

We have developed a metric system that calculates the averages from feedback given by researchers in form of numbers that show:

  • the extent to which they have understood the science in NASA’s shared resources.
  • and the extent to which they hope to use it in future scientific work and research following on a scale of 1-5.

Metric Description Continued

  • This feedback is given in a Chat bot by the researcher in anticipation of a promised reward of recommended related data from NASA and some exclusive documents.
  • These averages are fed as inputs into a formula which displays the effects and impact of open science as percentages..

In-Depth Explanation Of The Metric

  • Say the first, second and third person answer the first question in the chat bot ,which is:

To what extent do you think you have understood the content shared in the NASA data or results on a scale of 1-5?

  • If the answers are 3, 4 and 5 respectively, the system calculates the average which is 4 in this case. The system also calculates the percentage from the formular:

  • This percentage is displayed on different cards that classify all the documents basing on the main key words in them.

A look into the future

  • We hope to achieve a system that is very user friendly.
  • An extension that is not destructive to the researcher.
  • A system that uniquely identifies feedback from different researchers and ensures privacy of the captured feedback.
  • Implementation of a globe for visualization of the metrics.

This metric is quite straightforward but really accurate. The system is captivating to users in terms of giving feedback in return for a reward.

The system has a great future in terms of delivering the intended purpose of the metric and effectiveness. The system will be easily adopted because it has a social media aspect to it (A chat bot) which is really interactive.
