What is CPD?

  • CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. 
  • It refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain both formally and informally as you work, beyond any initial training.
  •  It’s a record of what you experience, learn and then apply.

What is it for?

  • The CPD process helps you manage your own development on an ongoing basis. 
  • Its function is to help you record, review and reflect on what you learn.

Training or development – what’s the difference?

  • These terms are often used interchangeably, though there is a distinction. 
  • As a rule of thumb, training is formal and linear. It’s to do with learning how to do something specific, relating to skill and competence. Training can be as simple as using a PC application and as complex as learning how to be a teacher.
  • Development is often informal and has a wider application, giving you the tools to do a range of things and relating to capability and competency. It involves progression from basic know-how to more advanced, mature or complex understanding.

The key features of the CPD process

To justify the name, CPD needs to:

  • be self-directed: driven by you
  • focus on learning from experience, reflective learning and review
  • help you set development goals and objectives
  • include both formal and informal learning.

What will it do for you?

CPD may be a requirement (yearly training courses at the Institute) or your inner desire of professional growth (attending webinars, master classes, workshops; observing lessons; professional reading, etc).

It can help you to reflect, review and document your learning and to develop and update your professional knowledge and skills.

Where am I now? ��Step 1: Review

 Review on both formal training events and informal learning, such as:

  • learning from colleagues or shared learning from networking (Facebook, Instagram, Viber groups and channels, etc)
  • reading about new approches, new methods and techniques of teaching, legislative changes and documents, 
  • insights and learning points from coaching and mentoring
  • reflections, insights and learning points from taking on a new responsibility
  • temporary job swaps within the school
  • deputising or covering for colleagues
  • insights and lessons learned from mistakes
  • lessons learned from critical incidents or events

Ask yourself and answer the following questions

  • What’s going on in my professional life at the moment? 
  • What’s going well; what’s not?

Think about where you want to be, what you want to develop. 

  • What are your goals?
  • What are your areas for development?

Where do I want to be?��Step 2: Plan

  • Write down your overall career goals – where you want to be in two, five and 10 years’ time. Then write down no more than three specific and achievable shorter term objectives, including the dates by which you want to achieve them.

  • Write your action plan focussing on each area for development.

What do I have to do to get there? ��Step 3: Take Action

  • Looking at your overall career goals, make a note of what you need to do to achieve them. This could include further training or changes in direction. If your students do not learn the way you teach, change the way you teach.
  • For shorter-term objectives, include the first step – what you can do today or tomorrow. For example, having a chat with your director or vice-director about a new responsibility or finding out about new ways of teaching from a colleague who has experience of it.
  •  Get feedback on what you do well from colleagues and ask their mind about your areas of development.
  • Dedicate time for your professional life and development.

3 Tips for Managing

 your CPD �in the Remote/Hybrid Working Era

  • Make the most of new Continuing Professional Development opportunities that weren’t available to you previously, such as global conferences and networking events.
  • Connect with individuals who can support you with your professional development – the ability to network with professionals outside of your current employer has arguably never been easier, with communities of interest on platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook providing individuals with access to mentoring, coaching and collective learning in a range of different areas. If you are relatively new to online networking, ask for recommendations from other professionals on sites like Twitter and LinkedIn – despite the often negative press surrounding social media, these platforms are home to a large number of supportive professionals and learning communities who can help you feel less isolated in your CPD journey.
  • Finally, remember that CPD is more than just the webinars, training sessions or other online activities you might take part in. “Reflecting on what we learn, implementing newly gained skills and expertise, deepening our knowledge through conversations, reading, and writing are as relevant as ever”.

Професійна діяльність

Учителі використовують Рамку для:

• рефлексії власної професійної діяльності;

• визначення професійних потреб для вибору змісту, видів та форм післядипломної освіти;

• планування власного професійного розвитку та здійснення самоосвітньої діяльності.

Для цього:

  1. Використовуючи дескриптори відповідної кваліфікаційної категорії, проаналізуйте свої професійні уміння у таких сферах діяльності: «Планування уроків та курсів»; «Розуміння учнів»; «Організація уроку»; «Евалюація та оцінювання навчальних досягнень»; «Знання предмета»; «Керування власним професійним розвитком».
  2. Проаналізуйте результати та визначте сфери, які варто розвивати (тобто Ваші відповіді: «потребую удосконалення», «не вмію/не застосовую»).
  3. За потреби, зверніться за допомогою до колег або адміністрації школи.
  4. Продумайте та складітть план дій щодо свого професійного розвитку.
  5. Якщо Ви бажаєте підвищити свою кваліфікаційну категорію, проаналізуйте свої уміння, користуючись дескрипторами наступної категорії.
  6. Складіть план дій відповідно до результатів аналізу.

What are some examples of professional development for EFL teachers?

Tune in to ELT webinars to expand your knowledge

Attending live webinars  is a great way to connect with 

other educators and with leaders in the ELT industry. You 

can stay up to date with the latest ELT news and teaching 

methods, as well as engage with a global community.  Webinars are ongoing - choose from multiple live sessions 

each month and cover diverse topics ranging from pedagogy to job tips to ELT classroom activity ideas.

Attend or present workshops at your school or virtually

  • Team up with colleagues to identify areas in your teaching methods or your school that could use improvement, such as handling challenging students online. Then, host a workshop on the specific skill set that needs to be addressed. Workshops can be held in person or virtually via software like Zoom.
  • These professional development workshops can be scheduled on a monthly or bi-monthly basis; teachers can take turns presenting or you can host a roundtable discussion instead. Consider incorporating peer evaluations or self-reflective practices like journaling into your workshops, providing teachers an opportunity to share the areas in which they excel and in which they need to improve. That way, you’ll never run out of workshop topics to cover!

Attend virtual or in-person TEFL/TESOL conferences

  • Attending TESOL  is a great way to continue your ELT professional development. There are many annual regional, national, and international conferences available to teachers, and these conferences are even shifting to a 100% online format.

Connect with ELT peers and influencers

  • There are various ways to connect with ESL peers or other experts in the field. Try joining an interactive TEFL/TESOL training course, with an international cohort of trainees, in order to share ideas with other teachers through online forums, discussion threads, and collaborative projects. 
  • You can also join EFL/ESL groups on social media sites like Facebook. These groups provide teaching support and allow you to discuss ELT methods and learning  and ideas with other professionals. Some groups even revolve around specific topics, such as lesson planning, to help you grow in specialized areas. 
  • You can also connect with ESL peers through networking events like conferences. Use these opportunities to attend information sessions, share ideas, and learn from experts in the industry.

Apply for a TESOL fellowship or grant

  • Applying for a teaching fellowship or research grant in an ESL-related field can give your career a huge boost in terms of making you more marketable and providing you with invaluable teaching experience.
  • National programs, such as the U.S. Department of State’s English Language Fellow Program, are competitive, and acceptance into one of these teaching programs looks great on your resume. If you’d rather focus on a research project for a specific ESL topic, try searching your government’s education site for grants. Most countries have a decent budget for awarding grant money to teachers for ESL projects, and having specialized, government-funded research under your belt will set you apart from other English language teaching professionals.
