A historical Timeline
The Premise
Nearly a century ago, John Dewey told us that the most effective education is experiential: Learning is achieved through personal experience and doing.
Almost a century of subsequent educational research has shown that Dewey was correct and that active learning and experiential learning are highly effective.
Some disciplines have always been able to engage in experiential education (not that they always have done so, just that they could). Disciplines such as environmental science, electrical engineering, studio art, and others that are inherently hands-on lend themselves to this type of teaching and learning.
The first 3D Models for Educational Reasons
Over the past centuries, educators have designed physical analog models to demonstrate processes found in nature. The Solar system physical models can be considered the first 3D models used in Education, followed by Human and Animal Skeletons transcending, in the 20th century, to even the molecular physical analog models.

What Is Digital 3D Modelling
3D modeling is a technique in computer graphics for producing a 3D digital representation of any object or surface.
Definitions and concepts
An artist uses special software to manipulate points in virtual space(called vertices) to form a mesh: a collection of vertices that form an object.
The 3D modeling process produces a digital object capable of being fully animated, making it an essential process for character animation and special effects.
What Is Digital 3D Modelling
Objects can also be generated through 3D scanning or sculpting, but those techniques have limitations in the precision of the final model. But what is gained in precision is lost in speed as 3D modeling can be a tedious process.
Definitions and concepts
Learning 3D modeling can be quite a challenge. Many of the programs are complicated and good modeling principles are based on fundamental art skills.
Free and available 3D models can be found and used for multiple different fields and mainly, education, game development, architecture and film making.
What is Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) is an enhanced version of the real physical world that is achieved through the use of digital visual elements, sound, or other sensory stimuli delivered via technology. It is a growing trend among companies involved in mobile computing and business applications in particular.
Amid the rise of data collection and analysis, one of augmented reality’s primary goals is to highlight specific features of the physical world, increase understanding of those features, and derive smart and accessible insight that can be applied to real-world applications.
Augmented Reality vs. Virtual Reality :
Augmented reality uses the existing real-world environment and puts virtual information on top of it to enhance the experience.

Benefits of AR and 3D Modelling for Education
3D models are easily examined and manipulated without damage to physical specimen.
3D models give students unlimited time with a specimen
3D models are easily shared
A teaching collection is a high-turnover collection that gets handled and examined during class. Normally these collections break down quickly, so instructors are hesitant to include rare and fragile specimens. Having digital proxies for these rare and fragile specimens will allow students access to otherwise unknown information. This has even bigger benefits to distance students, as they don’t have to be anywhere near the collection to examine its contents.
If you have a biology lab, and the students are looking at skull morphology, there’s a distinct possibility that you would have a skull on hand to examine. If there are 30 students in the course, each student will have only a short amount of time to examine the specimen. If that same skull was scanned and made into a 3D model, each student could examine it simultaneously, for as long as they need.
Many schools and universities around the world are digitizing their collections and sharing them. There is a fair amount of overlap in the models being created, but the ability to add regionally exclusive content to a global repository would be an amazing benefit to science at large. Smaller schools can have access to a greater pool of materials, and that is good for everyone.

3D models can be analyzed
A 3D model is a media object. That means it can be examined, but it’s special in the way that it can be interacted with. Functionality can be built on and around a 3D model. Models can be manipulated, animated, and scaled. A photograph captures the light bouncing off of an object, that is closer to a description of the object. A 3D model is a representation of the actual physical properties of the object, and that strikes at the nature of the object itself. This means that a 3D model can “stand in” for a real object in simulations, and the laws of physics can be applied accurately. This realistic depth and spatial presence can be very impactful to students.
Because 3D models are accurate, and because they occupy no physical space, they lend themselves to analysis techniques unavailable to the physical world. Two models can be literally laid on top of one another to highlight any differences. Measurements of structures can be taken with a few clicks. In the case of a machined part, material stress tests can be run over and over without the need to replace the part.

How to create your own 3D models
A 3D scan is the digital representation of the object or person you are 3D scanning. During the 3D scanning process, you are capturing the shape of an item (object, face or body of a person) using a 3D scanning application on your tablet or mobile phone, or even a proper 3D scanning device. The sensors of the individual device collect data related to the shape, the depth and the color of the item you are 3D scanning and they form the final 3D file. After the 3D scan is converted into a 3D file, you can edit the result with a 3D modeling application. This gives you the possibility to modify and use your 3D scan as avatar in VR (Virtual Reality) games or even to 3D print it. That’s how the object passes from the physical form to the digital one.

Let’s say you like a 3D model but you’d like it to be slightly different. The first step is that you download it and not stay with exists in the online version. The hard choice now is which format do you choose?
The Right Format
Which option you will chose to download in order to edit a 3D model of your choice depends on the software you will end up using to edit them and this consequently depends on the extent you wish to follow in order to alter your model, and the amount of hours you can dedicate in learning a software.

Most 3D scanning apps provide a built in editing program which you can use to edit your model. That being said, doing so may be more challenging than it sounds as some times with scanning you loose multiple details and elements. That being said even if you do not concern yourselves with using an external editing software we really encourage you to follow our trainings on 3D modelling in practice that will be coming soon!
