You can follow along on “Speaker Notes” to read my full narrative explaining what I think happened, going along with these slides.

Speaker Notes

2 of 22

  • 51-49 Senate (+1 from 2020)
  • 24 Governors (+2 from 2021)
  • 213 House Seats (-7 seats)
  • Statehouse highlights (MI, PA, MN)

(yay!)

What Happened?: National

3 of 22

There is still vote left to count, especially out west. Some of these numbers will shift. I am working from preliminary data.

But I am confident enough of the vote is in to make clear claims about both New York and national Democrats.

What Happened?: Disclaimer

4 of 22

What Happened?: National

Democrats beat expectations even while narrowly losing the national popular vote

5 of 22

What Happened?: National

While Democrats did not lose the turnout game by a wide margin, the election at the national level was decided by persuasion

6 of 22

  • Democrats outperformed their national baseline in competitive races, especially for Senate and Governor, due to a further backlash from swing voters against MAGA candidates
  • Democratic message discipline made all the difference: swing voters heard a clear message about the extremism of Republican candidates and voted against them

What Happened?: National

7 of 22

While the national swing against the Democrats was about 4-5 points and statewide candidates generally performed better than that baseline, in New York the statewide candidates ran ~15 points behind their benchmarks

What Happened?: New York

8 of 22

No state delegation ran further behind their 2020 level than New York’s candidates for House of Representatives

What Happened?: New York

9 of 22

  • 4 of the 8 Biden seats that Republicans flipped were in New York
  • 4 of the 5 flipped Biden seats with the highest 2020 margin were in New York
  • NY Dems went from a state delegation of 20 to a delegation of 15, the largest loss in the country

What Happened?: New York

What Happened?: New York

Persuasion and Turnout

(dark purple for swing from Biden to Zeldin, bright pink for Trump to Hochul, likewise for lower and higher relative turnout)

11 of 22

What Happened?: New York

Hochul’s worst losses were concentrated in New York City and its inner suburbs

Why?

Because this was where we saw the conjunction of the swing voter crisis with the turnout crisis

(NYC counties in orange)

12 of 22

The Congressional map could look like a “suburbs” problem but it was really a New York City metro area problem

What Happened?: New York

13 of 22

At the Assembly level, the same pattern holds: Democratic losses in swing districts at the intersection of the turnout and swing voter crises

What Happened?: Brooklyn

14 of 22

What Happened?: Brooklyn

Nearly universal turnout collapse, and large swings to Zeldin in Southern BK

(blue for swing to Zeldin, yellow for swing to Hochul, likewise blue for lower relative turnout, yellow for higher)

15 of 22

What Happened?: Brooklyn

  • The Turnout Problem and the Swing Voter Problem were mostly not correlated
  • Very conservative areas saw higher turnout
  • But there is almost no correlation between turnout effects and swing from Dem -> Rep

16 of 22

What Happened?: Brooklyn

  • It was not a candidate problem
  • In every district, there were more Chu-Zeldin or Frontus-Zeldin voters than there were LaBella-Hochul or Krasny-Hochul voters
  • Blaming the candidates would be gross even if it weren’t also false

17 of 22

What Happened?: Takes

A Huge Failure

  • Demotivated voters in base areas across the city and state
  • Swing areas turned hard for Zeldin and Republicans
    • Notably, demobilization remained the case, relatively, in swing areas of Kings, Queens, Richmond and Nassau Counties -- but the swing went for Zeldin

Campaign failures are rarely either/or, but rather both/and

18 of 22

What Happened?: Takes

The Big Problems

  • Why was Lee Zeldin popular? (Quinnipiac Poll with Hochul up 4 points showed Zeldin with +6 favorability)
  • The Crime Narrative (NJ-03 New York media market effects)
  • The very things national Democrats did so well (message discipline and defining Republican extremism) were precisely what was missing in New York

19 of 22

Crime

Crime increased everywhere, but political effects very different in the NYC metro area

20 of 22

What Happened?: Takes

The Margins Always Matter

  • There are always seats at the margins that you can win or lose
  • The total failure of the state and county parties to provide early funding to local electeds stands out
  • Specific losses with particular communities of voters played a role in Brooklyn and Queens
  • Ground game?

21 of 22

What Happened?: Takes

2022 must be a wake up call to New York Democrats. Our party’s failures cost Democrats a possible majority in the House of Representatives.

Without a clear reckoning over what went wrong, we will put both state and national goals at risk in upcoming elections.

Hi! Thanks for Reading

I’m Mikael Haxby, the VP of Organizing for New Kings Democrats, and this was my slideshow.

I’d be happy to talk more about this -- I’m mildly obsessed with all this stuff -- and you can reach me at organizing@newkingsdemocrats.com
