GOAL: Run the COS marathon in September in as close to 3:30 hours as I can.

PURPOSE: Because I am an endurance athlete who does hard things. This marathon will give me perspective on life and work; help satisfy my sense of adventure this year; and let me achieve something I am proud of, which I haven’t done in a while.

LEAD MEASURES:

  • Weekend long, slow distance run.
  • Weekly interval sessions, rotating between ½ mi, 1 mi, and 2 mi distances.
  • Complete a tempo run every other week.
  • Lift and cross train 3x per week.
  • Rest 1-day every 1-2 weeks.

LAG MEASURES:

  • Sign up for a 10 km race (May-June) and at least 1x half marathon (June-August).
  • Maintain 30-40 mi/week; keep track of 3-week averages.
  • Compare interval paces every month and how they compare to previous months.
  • Record a perceived energy level prior to each run to log perceived energy levels week-to-week (to assess if training plan is sustainable).
  • Record any injuries or risk of injuries throughout training.

GOAL: Starting in 2025, make it a habit to delay giving advice during calls with mentees, and commit to coaching them more through their situations and challenges.

PURPOSE: I don’t want to be a “hero” mentee who simply solves peoples’ problems for them with advice. I want to develop self-sustaining leaders who can own their challenges, think critically through them, and create their own plan of action to address it. People have more abilities, resources, and know-how than they believe.

LEAD MEASURES:

  • Ask twice as many questions during the conversation as statements I make.
  • Focus on asking open-ended what and how questions, not why.
  • Start conversations with mentees using a contract – I will only offer advice if they ask for it, and they can only ask for it once they truly believe they are out of personal ideas or options to explore.

LAG MEASURES:

  • Record how much of the conversation I talk versus how much my mentee talks.
  • Conduct post-conversation reflection: Are there parts of the conversation where I could have asked another question instead of transitioned to giving advice?
  • Seek feedback from my mentee after the conversation, asking how my approach landed with them and if they felt I rushed into giving advice.
