Welcome to the manual “Yoga for Youth: Mental Health and Harmony”. This guide is a collaborative effort produced by Migration and Migration Alignment (Italy), Citizen Association United Youth (North Macedonia), Stichting Drawing to Health (Netherlands), Fundacja Marki Polskiej im. prof. Witolda Kieżuna (Poland).

This manual is part of the Erasmus+ project MHM – Mental Health Matters, with the project number 2022-3-IT03-KA210-YOU-000092944. It is designed to equip you with the knowledge, tools, and practical guidance needed to incorporate yoga into daily life, fostering mental well-being, and helping young individuals navigate the challenges of young age with resilience and inner peace.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this manual is to provide educational guidance and support to the target audience in the field of mental health protection. It aims to facilitate their work by offering practical materials and insights to develop new activities that promote mental health awareness and utilize yoga as a method for relaxation and stress control in both professional and everyday life.

In the following chapters, we will delve into specific strategies, guidelines, and best practices to achieve these objectives effectively.

SCOPE OF THE MANUAL

The scope of this manual encompasses the following key objectives:

  1. To promote best practices in mental health protection from four European Union (EU) countries.
  2. To advocate for the use of yoga as a relaxation method to raise public health awareness.
  3. To encourage the adoption of sport habits and active sports engagement through non-formal education.
  4. To equip organizational representatives, employees, youth workers, volunteers, youth leaders, young people, marginalized categories, and mentors with the necessary knowledge and resources to address mental health challenges effectively.

INTRODUCTION TO YOGA

  • Yoga is a holistic practice integrating mind, body, and soul, promoting wellbeing, self-acceptance, and healthy relationships.
  • Originating in ancient India, it is rooted in Hinduism and focuses on union (yuj) of the physical body, intellect, and spirit.
  • The practice has evolved over 5,000 years and includes the 8 Limbs of Yoga by Patanjali: Asanas, Pranayama, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi, Yama, Niyama, and Pratyahara.
  • Western adaptation, particularly Hatha Yoga, focuses on physical postures, meditation, and breathing, popularized in the 20th century.
