Advisory

  • Goal 1: Connect every student with at least one adult in the building

  • Goal 2: Create a sense of community

Students will be with the same Advisory teacher for all 3 years.

Advisory is listed as Block 9 on schedules, but is at the start of every day from 8:50-9:10am.

Activities/lessons include SHMS info, Second Step, team building games, academic skills lessons, and much more!

Resource/Spectrum

  • Every other day, students have a resource class for 45 minutes.

  • Students have time to complete homework and meet with teachers.

  • We advise students to use this time wisely so they can minimize the amount of homework to take home.
  • Students who are currently in Search/Futura will automatically be enrolled in Spectrum

  • Evaluation process dates for interested Spectrum students will be advertised in early September.

Some Spectrum topics covered in 6th grade include:

Technology

  • Students will transition from elementary to middle school with their LCPS issued Chromebook
  • Students use their Chromebook to access digital resources. We no longer rely on textbooks.
  • Some students choose to bring their phones to school, but they are not required for educational use.
  • We ask students to keep their phones in their lockers during the day

  • Visit with your English class and on your own time.

  • Check out new books that weren’t available at your elementary school.

  • Participate in crafts, activities, and play games during lunch.

Activity Buses

  • Activity Buses run on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays starting in late September/early October
  • These are regional stops and only 3 buses for the entire school.
  • Can take up to an hour to get home.
  • Students may need to walk up to a mile from the drop off point.
