2024-2025
August 14th, 2024
Dear Families,
Welcome back to a new school year! My name is Halee Haynes and I will be your child’s teacher this year! This will be my 9th year of teaching and my second year here at Canton Elementary School. I live in Edom, where I live with my Husband John, and son John. I attended A&M-Commerce where I pursued my elementary education degree and masters of education degree. In my free time I enjoy exercising and reading. This summer I really enjoyed the time with my son.
Second grade is a very busy year filled with lots of fun and exciting learning opportunities. I am very excited about what is in store for your child this year, and I look forward to working with you as well.
I look forward to a fun-filled year with your child. I have many exciting things planned and can’t wait to get started!
Sincerely,
Halee Haynes

HOMEWORK
I will be sending home homework in the back of take home folders. In it there will be nightly fluency page to practice building fluency and a packet that has quick spelling and reading activities for every day. I encourage you to read every night with your student and ask questions about the reading, however, I do NOT want homework to become a horrendous time in your house. Make it fun and enjoyable for everyone!
BEHAVIOR
My number one priority in the classroom is to provide a safe, loving environment. My goal is to build relationships with all students so we can all feel a safe community in the classroom. As a class, we will decide on our classroom rules together and build a social contract that we can all agree upon. These will be our guided principles, and rules in the classroom that everyone will be expected to follow.
Class Dojo- Class Dojo is an app that can be used for positive and negative behavior, while also used as a class blog! I have attached a note and sign up for you!
Fix It Tickets- Just like adults tickets, students can to! A fix it ticket is when students have broken one of our treasured rules. During this time, a student will independently fill out a “ticket”. After a ticket is filled out, we have a one to one conference to discuss what happened and how we can make it better! I have attached an example!
This year we will be using a web-based program called Class Dojo to help track students’ behavior and to stay in contact! Not only is this a great behavior management tool, but it is also an excellent communication tool to help keep you updated about your child’s behavior, academics, and the happenings of the classroom!
In Class Dojo, students can earn points for positive behaviors such as being on task, following directions, helping others, etc. Students can also lose points for negative behaviors such as being off task, not following directions, not turning in work, etc. I will note students behavior into Class Dojo and you will be able to instantly see when I do this! Sometimes they will know when they are earning/losing points because they will hear a high or low pitch ‘ding’ through the overhead projector. Other times they may not know they are earning or losing points.
Another bonus of Class Dojo is that students can create their own account, so they can check on their own progress as well. Parents and teachers can also message back-and-forth regarding your child. It is a great communication tool and is a great way for you to stay informed on your students progress.
Attached is your invitation letter from Class Dojo with directions on how to connect to our class, for both you and your child. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am looking forward to using this great resource!
Sincerely,
Halee Haynes
I love to take pictures while the students are hard at work and having fun. Often times, I will post these pictures in our classroom, on our school website, in newsletters, hang them in the hallway, attach them to student work, and even post them on our secured class Instagram. By signing below, you are granting me permission to take your child's picture and use in the above circumstances. If you do not sign, your child’s photo will never be taken and used for classroom purposes.
Sincerely,
Halee Haynes

The Fridge
This year we will have a special place in our classroom called "The Fridge". This will be a wall in our classroom where students will be able to post their favorite work, artwork, something they are proud of or just pictures of them or family! If you would like for your child to participate, please send in 1-2 photos to be displayed. Throughout the course of the year, students might want to change out their items on "The Fridge". Please make sure these photos are school appropriate! One of my main goals in the classroom is to make sure it is a safe learning environment for your student! Having a little piece of home will help them feel like they belong & helps build classroom community. If you have any questions, Please feel reach to reach out.
