CVUPT - Overview

The Virtual Campus of the Politehnica University Timisoara (CVUPT):

  • Started officially in 2009
  • Initially based on Moodle 1.9 (currently on 2.9)
  • Less than 3000 users (now almost 15000)
  • Distance Learning -> Distance Learning + Master’s courses + Bachelor courses (on request)
  • Blended learning
  • Closed system (no self-registration and no self-enrollments)

Why Moodle?

  • most popular free and open-source software (FOSS) learning management system (LMS)
  • almost 70,000 registered installations
  • over 9 million courses
  • 83 million users*
  • global community of users, administrators and developers
  • over 1000 plugins **

Why closed?

CVUPT is:

  • the official LMS for the Distance Learning program in UPT
  • the official support for the Masters programs in UPT
  • home to over 50 courses for Bachelor studies from 6 Faculties and departments (upon request)

Therefore we need:

  • student and teacher confidence in privacy
  • easy-to-use tools and interfaces

Challenges

CVUPT has:

  • almost 1300 courses
  • almost 13,000 users
  • no self-registration and no self-enrollments

Therefore, the administration team handles:

  • account creation and management
  • course creation and enrollments
  • centralized annual reset of courses
