Objectives:

  • Demonstrate and describe how three or more components of the Michigan AT Guidelines can assist educators with evaluating and monitoring students’ technology skill development.
  • Demonstrate filling out and using the Tool Record Keeping Chart as a technology inventory list for PreK – Grade 12 with one student’s toolkit information.
  • Demonstrate using search filters to identify two or more Apps using the Assistive Apps page on the MDE-LIO website.

The Assistive Technology (AT) Guidelines is based on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards to which the Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS) connects. These guidelines follow six the key concepts of ISTE & MITECS

Keyboarding Skills - Technology Operations and Concepts

  • PreK

Skill 3: Explore and use the keyboard and perform basic operations with teacher-guided assistance.

Teacher Activity (TA) 1: Explore the keyboard, mouse, joystick, tablet, or other adaptive devices, using age-appropriate program

Skill Progression - Keyboarding

  • Grades 3 - 5

Skill 6: Demonstrate the use of a keyboard, navigational keys, mouse, touch screen devices and buttons/keys of ATDs and adaptive devices.

TA 6: Practice and assess QWERTY keyboard skills with a goal of 25 wpm with 85% accuracy. Practice and assess accuracy of finger gestures.

  • Grades 9 – 12:

Skill 11: Demonstrate the ability to complete class activities, work assignments, daily living skills, and leisure activities by using a keyboard, navigational keys, mouse, joystick, or switch with digital/electronic devices, touch-screen tablets, mobile devices, accessible technologies and adaptive devices specific to the student’s needs.

TA 11: Continue to practice and assess the use of proper keyboarding posture, finger positions, and touch-typing techniques to improve accuracy, speed, and general efficiency in operating a computer with a goal of 55-65 words per minute.
