Formative is an assessment tool where students can type, show (draw) their thinking, or submit images to demonstrate their learning. This web app allows you to quickly and easily create formative assessments and assignments for your classroom. You can upload or embed your own content (PDFs, Docs, Slides, etc.) and easily create questions - most of which can be auto-graded. Teachers can easily respond with feedback (text, audio, draw, etc.) and have two-way communication with students about their work!

How students sign in: Assigning Formatives in Canvas, using Grade Passback and posting to the calendar is highly recommended!

Students will automatically be signed in when using Canvas.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO: If you plan on using Canvas Grade Passback, you will NOT want students using this link. We recommend deleting it:

Canvas>settings>navigation >remove Formative>save

Students should go through the “assignment” you create. More info can be found here and here.

Canvas Grade Passback

9

For Grade Passback to work you must:

  • In Formative: “Assign” the Formative to your classes (make sure to use the auto-rostered classes created for you)
  • In Canvas: create an assignment in Canvas using the external tool
  • Students MUST take the Formative while in the Canvas window or in the tab loaded from the assignment. If they go directly to formative.com, it will not work with Grade Passback.
  • Teachers: Initiate the Passback (three dots in Formative title) while you are in the Canvas assignment window or the new tab that the canvas assignment loaded into. It will NOT work if you initiate Passback from formative.com. You MUST BE in Canvas.

Complete/Incomplete!

10

Teachers can now pass grades back from Formative to Canvas as complete/incomplete! This is a new option on the LTI Grade Passback modal. This will pass back a "Complete" for any student who has submitted the formative, regardless of their score, and an "Incomplete" for any student who has not submitted it. This will work even if the points total for the formative (and/or the Canvas assignment) is set to zero. Teachers can also manually adjust the complete/incomplete on this modal before sending it back to the Canvas gradebook.

This 16-min. VIDEO will explain how to assign a Formative in Canvas & Use Grade Passback in Canvas (most info is up to date, but not all)

This 4-min. VIDEO will explain a GREAT shortcut for complete / incomplete!

This may be not be necessary now that you can toggle on complete / incomplete

Want to make sure students go through Canvas?

New Feature!! Ensures that students go through Canvas to access their Formative!

Students get this message if they don’t go through Canvas

You can only enable this feature in the assign settings while you are in Canvas (or the tab loaded from Canvas)

Grade Passback Possibilities

This student didn’t do any work on the Formative. The grade Passback will not work:

This student took the assignment in Canvas but did not hit the submit button in Formative. I need to manually check the box so the grade will pass back:

This student took the assignment and hit the submit button. Passback will work and their box is checked automatically:

Christine Darden

This student took the assignment and hit the submit button but did NOT do it in the Canvas window or tab. Passback will NOT work. Notice the different message in red.

These are the various possible messages you will see in the Passback window. Notice the last red message is different than the first...

Classes & Students

Your classes should already be auto-rostered for you. DO NOT use CLEVER for any reason. If your classes are not pre-rostered for you, please reach out to Jennifer Mann for support.

While students are auto-rostered into your class, they are not automatically dropped if they leave the class. You will need to manually remove them.

New Feature!!!!

A feature that was released that we hope will be really helpful! You can now sort student responses by submission date - either ascending or descending!

If you choose "Submission Date (Desc)," this will put the most recent submissions at the top of the responses.

Delayed Feedback

Delayed feedback will be triggered when the assignment is closed. Here is more info from their help center. To send delayed feedback, first in your Assign Options, set After Submission to "Keep visible (no edits allowed)" and the Return Scores option to "when closed".

If you didn't want kids to have access to seeing the Formative before your feedback was returned, perhaps set your assign settings during the test to "hidden" after submission, then you can give your feedback. Once you are done grading and ready to share that feedback with your students, you will want to close the assignment. Make sure to change it back to "Keep visible (no edits allowed)" so kids can see the questions with the feedback. Don’t forget to hit UPDATE!

Undo submission

Removing the submission will allow the student to retake the assignment (or get more time in a timed test). The answers the student has added will not be changed or removed.

Pro tip! You can use this feature for accommodations when you want to offer more time to specific students during a test. For example, if you have a 60-minute time limit for your entire class but you want to offer additional time for specific students: Once the full class test has reached the 60-minute time limit, update your assign settings so that you restrict the test to the individuals needing more time. Update the timer as well. Undo Submissions for those specific students so that their new timer will start again. Their previously entered answers will not be lost. Make sure to hit update. Remember to toggle off restricted students after these students have had a chance to finish their test.

How can students message their teacher in a Formative?

Question here...

Student Side - they send you message to let you know they are working on a question or formative...

STEP 2: Just TYPE your message and press SEND!

STEP 1: Student clicks here first to send a message.

How will my teacher know if I worked on a

Formative after it has already been graded?

Student Side - Students need to send a message to let their teacher know they are working on a question or formative…

Click on the chat icon in the Formative

Teacher Side - Teachers will receive a notification that lets them know that a student has an updated response or Formative. If you click on this message, it will take teachers directly into that question/formative.

36 of 84

Notification that a student has changed an answer after you have graded it.

36

If a student edits a response after it has been graded, there will be an exclamation point (and warning message) on that response in View Responses. There is not currently a notification that the teacher receives, however.

**Note that the alert only appears on questions that were manually graded by the teacher from the start. I believe that if Formative auto-grades something, then the teacher adjusts the grade, then the student edits their response, an alert would not appear. (we are looking into this to see if this can also work on auto-graded questions)

Adjust your Assign settings: This is a good time to think about how you want students to receive feedback & make edits during remote learning opportunities. Here is one possibility:

  • Return scores after submit
  • Allow students to edit after submit
  • Return correct answer after you close it so students have time to correct mistakes.

How Can Students Retake A Formative

45

If you would like your students to retake a Formative, you can change the Assign Setting to “allow edits”. If you do not want to give access to everyone, and just select students, you can turn on “Restrict to Individual Students”, and select the students in the list. When the select students have finished, just turn off that restriction and close edits.
