Even if you have already started your template, you may come up with new ideas that are worth editing or changing from what you had before. This activity will force you to consider some thoughts about the world in which your story takes place.

What is the setting of your short story?

What will be the setting of your Netflix series?

Items to consider:

  • TIME (do you need a specific year, or is it vague?)
  • LOCATION (where is this happening? A real place in our current world? A new society or world never before seen? What does it look like? What is different about it than the world we live in today? What rules are in place here? Who has power, and who doesn’t?)

DAY-TO-DAY LIFE (note that all questions will not be applicable or answerable for your particular story...but you can still determine an answer!)

What’s the weather like in this world?

Where do the inhabitants live and work and go to school?

What do they eat?

How do they play?

How do they treat their young and their old?

What relationships do they have with the animals and plants of the world? What do the animals and plants look like?

  • What other characters will star in your TV series?
    • What role / importance do they play in regard to the plot?
      • Do they provide background context, or do they drive the conflict?
      • Are they allies of your main character, or enemies? Is it unknown? Will it surprise the viewer?
      • Are there any new characters you will incorporate that are not in the original story?
