Transformational Mentoring

…Taking the initiative to join someone’s life journey and become one of God’s instruments to help that person become all that God wants them to become and do all that He wants them to do.

It is how Jesus did discipleship: relational, life-on-life, intentional.

A Framework for Mentoring Pastors

4 of 12

4

Practical Steps

  1. Ask the Lord to prepare your heart. Are you ready to pour you life into developing others in Christlikeness, either one-on-one or in a small group?
  2. In prayer, identity those whom the Lord has placed in your relationship circles.

--Who seems open to a mentoring relationship?

--Who are the pastors and potential pastors you see?

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you seek out the individual(s) that He is laying on your heart.

Practical Steps

  1. Intentionally adjust priorities & schedule to make room for mentoring.
  2. Take the initiative to reach out to potential mentees. Start by inviting them to meet with you over coffee.
  3. Ask about their lives and how they are doing. “Tell me your story.”
  4. Don’t mention the word “mentor.” Ask if they would be willing to meet with you regularly to speak into one another’s lives.
  5. Set the time and place. Don’t procrastinate!

Practical Steps

  1. Start by catching up on what’s been happening in each other’s lives.
  2. Practice “active listening,” Listen ‘between the lines’ to really understand the mentee’s heart. Open your heart.
  3. Share your experiences and perspective to help the mentee make practical life application.
  4. Do not order the mentee to do anything! Help them to make their own decisions in the Lord.
  5. Apply the Word of God wisely.
  6. Encourage, encourage, encourage!
  7. Pray with and for your mentee.

HEART: Every Paul Should have a Heart for Multiplication

Considering all we have talked about during this course, what personal heart issues do you need to address with God? Go back over what you have written in your reflection pages. Pray. Repent of anything that is standing between you and your participation in multiplying mentoring in your area. Then make an Action Plan.
