Here is an Example of Our Communication with Police

Across the country, we are seeing incidents at schools where there have been lockdowns due to reports of threats, which include fake threats. A large number of parents are responding to those schools and demanding entry into the school.

We want you to know that the Westmont and Willowbrook Police Department trains in active threat response and we are prepared to quickly address threats at our schools.

Safety Measures during the day

  • All visitors must come into the school through the main office
  • District 60 has a new system that scans the ID of every visitor
  • Staff keep classroom doors locked with a magnet to easily secure the classroom
  • When students are outside radios are out with staff
  • Office will not release a student to an adult unless parents put adult as emergency contact or give us permission
  • Staff take attendance in the AM and PM after lunch/recess
  • Chromebook: We have software to track student history and teachers can view what students are doing.

Instruction During the School Year

Here are the reasons why we ask parents to stand by for an all-clear or respond to a reunification center, and NOT respond to the school.

  • The extra vehicle traffic impedes responding police, fire and EMS personnel and slows down response time.
  • Schools on lockdown do not let parents in because they do not have the resources to determine who is an actual parent and who might be a threat
  • In the event of an actual threat, a parent at the school could become an additional victim
  • We do not have the time to tell if someone entering a school is a parent or a threat in an active situation, could lead to mistaking them for an offender.
  • The children in our community are our highest priority. Please rest assured in the event of a active threat, the police are responding in full force. YOU can help us the most by waiting for further instructions from the school and law enforcement.

Parent Questions

Are the doors bullet proof on the inside as you mentioned they lock but is the glass indoors also bullet proof?

The interior doors do not have the film that exterior doors have.

How empowered do teachers feel in responding to these high threat situations? What can we do as parents to support the administration in preparing for these situations?

Our Run, Hide, Fight protocol is intended to empower our staff to make the decision in that moment that they believe to be in the best interest of their personal and student safety.

Administration receives ample training and works closely with emergency personnel to refine our practices. You attendance and care is all we need. Thank you.

What training do teachers receive in preparing for intruders?

Teachers participate in all emergency drills.
