Why we need a change in the materials used in sports garments?

• Are typically made from synthetic materials harmful to the environment

​

• Often restricts movement

​

• Can trap moisture against the skin

• May contain toxic chemicals

A solution to shield your skin and feel the freedom of a second skin

The name comes after the Japanese pronunciation of “Skin”

​

This project connects with the awareness of sustainability through a new material innovation:

First Recipes�

Exp01 - BioSlime (Cellulose CMC Based)

Exp02 -Microcellulose film (Cellulose CMC based)

Exp03 - Soft Sponge (Cellulose CMC based)

These materials did not work well because they required oven heating to dry and the final producto were difficult to remove from the Petri dishes – Difficult to escalate it to Macro scale

Exp05 - Gelatin

Ingredients:

- 120 ml of water

- 24 gr of gelatin

- 20 ml of glycerol

- Pinch of Cinnamon

The gelatin melts superficially and the sensation in the skin is like in contact with a gel

Results:

Resistent,

Flexible, transparent,

Good Smell,

Exp06 – Gelatin BioInk

Exp08 – Gelatin SunCream

Succesful Experiment!

​

This “second skin” Will interact with the sweat. Once in contact it Will melt delivering the sun cream to the skin

​

This is a natural DYI suncream used to protect Athletes from Sun burnt in outdoor activities

Exp09 – Gelatin SunCream Improved

Improved recipe without oils and only using the ZnO powders

​

Succesful Experiment!

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) refers to the time that Skin can be exposed to the Sun*

​

​

Ingredients:

- 120 ml of water

- 24 gr of gelatin

- 20 ml of glycerol

- Pinch of Cinnamon

- 5 teaspoon of Zinc Oxide – Each teaspoon add a Sun Protection Factor of 10

Results:

Resistent,

Flexible, Opaque,

First Spray Method

Succesful Experiment!

• Material Sprayed in the skin
• Multilayered material obtained via Spray
• Not uniform material obtained. Also, bubble formation in the layers is observed

New Spray Method – Improved DIY Spray gun

• Material Sprayed with smooth surface
• Multilayered material for a top garment
• Mica poder added to the mix to increase contrast

• With the Aerosol spray it is obtained a better finishing as the material droplets are sprayed evenly because of the air

Advantages of Spray Process

• It takes around 1 to 2 minutes for each layer to dry
• Once each layer is dry , another layer is sprayed
• A fan is recommended to accelerate the drying process

​

• Around 80ml of material was used for this 3mm thickness / 5 layered top
• The estimation of material is 0,4 ml/cm2

​

• Unisex garments
• Works in all bodies and skins

​

​

Outdoor Performance

• Any outdoor sport can be performed with Sukin. i.e. Running, Yoga, Corssfit, Volleyball, Skating, etc

​

• Around 180ml of material was used for a single layer full body cover with manual spray
• Amount of material will vary in function of personal height and weight

​

• Drying time is around 3 minutes and the use of a fan is recommended for faster drying

​

Conclusion of outdoor performance

• It worked!

​

• There were no spots in elbows nor in any other vending point

​

• Sukin did not melt completely nor left any open spot

​

• When Sukin melts it can be felt as a smooth gel

Exp10 – Gelatin Decomposition

• Soil

Material Removal

• Ecofriendly material washed in the sea: Instantly removed

​

• You cannot peel it off

​

• You need to massage the material and see how it fades in the nature�
• No oil components

Potential development

• Develop pressurised can with the material

​

• Replace gelatine récipe: continue developing the material

​

• Develop cabins where you can spray your clothes (same principle as where you change your clothes)

​

• Develop an interface betwwen the skin and Sukin so that the garment can be removed after use

Conclusions

• Effectively protects from the sun and bad smells components

​

• It is breathable as there is a thin layer on the body and when it is in contact with the sweat you feel a gel sensation and the material does not melt at all

​

• After being in contact with the water, it doesn’t fade away instantly so it can be used in case of rain without inconvenience - waterproof for a short time

​

• After its use, Sukin was effectively removed and washed in the sea without any pollution to the environment

​

• People stared at me all the time wondering what I was wearing – It is an innovative product

​
