My guest in my home town for the first time
Veles
Veles – city of culture, literature, architecture.
The heart of Macedonia, through which the blood of the revolutionaries and revivalists who gloriously died for the freedom we have today flows.
Birthplace of famous poets whose works are intertwined in the history of Macedonian literature.
Veles has a rich and extensive history. There are quite a few historical monuments from the past that have been preserved and serve as tourist attractions, and with their age and unique construction, they radiate an echo of the past. It is also the birthplace of important individuals whose works have made a great contribution to the history of the Macedonian people.
The clock tower is one of the most recognizable buildings in Veles and can be said to be a trademark of the city. Also present on the municipality flag, the clock tower was built in the 16th century and originally served as an observation structure for Ottoman guards, until its use was diverted into a town clock. The appearance of the tower and the unique architecture is symbolic.
The Twelve Gemidzii Monument has one of the most specific and unique looks in the city. This monument was built 100 years after the Ilinden Uprising in honor of the Gemidzii and their contribution to the Macedonian liberation movement.
The Youth park is a place where the citizens of Veles often go for walks. The park is full of greenery and has a fountain that beautifies the view. In the amphitheater, which is located in the lower part of the park, various types of performances, manifestations and concerts are held, usually in the summer.
Left of the park we have the church St. Cyril and Methodius, which is the largest church in Veles.
To the right of the park, however, we have the theater Jordan Hadzi Konstantinov Dzinot, where fans od drama can experience extraordinary and unique performances and shows.
In Veles there is also representation of the Muslim religion. As a sacred building dedicated to people who are part of the religion, we have the Black Mosque, which is located on the left side of the Vardar River. The neighborhood near it shares the same name.
The Kosturnica monument was built in memory of the Partisan soldiers who fought for the freedom of Veles and for Macedonia in general during the National Liberation War. This monument also serves as a resting place for about a hundred fallen Partisan soldiers from Veleshko.
The Vardar River is the longest river in Macedonia and its course passes through the city of Veles and divides it into two halves. In the past, people built bridges to reach the other side of the town, and therefore the bridges are quite characteristic of the city.
The Iron bridge and its solid and durable construction testifies to the effort and trouble that the people went through while building this bridge.
The house of one of the greatest Macedonian poets, Kocho Racin, is located in Veles and was built at the end of the 19th century, on the left side of the Vardar river. This house represents the traditional old Veles house and is considered the house with the most attractive architecture.
The house of Jordan Hadzi Konstantinov Dzinot was built in a classic Veles alley and was declared a cultural monument due to its specific old-town construction.
The house of Kasapovi is a significant symbol of the old town buildings, but it separates from the others by the fact that it is built on a rock - a steep terrain and from a distance it looks like it is floating.
Vasil Glavinov's house is considered one of the most beautiful features of old town architecture. Today it is a museum dedicated to his life and works.
Koco Racin and his literary work are one of the most symbolic things about Veles
Since Lenka lefta blouse of fine linenunfinished on her loomto go to her clogs to sorttobacco in the factory, her face has changed, her eyebrows fallen, her lips tight drawn.
Lenka was not bornfor that accursedtobacco!Tobacco-gilded poisonfor her breast-pinkgarlands.
The first year passeda load lay on her heart;the second year went bysickness tore her breast. The third year the earthcovered Lenka’s body.
At night when the moonwraps her grave in silk, the breeze above hersadly warfs sorrow:“Why was it leftunwoven that blouse? The blouse was for your dowry …”
