BACKGROUND

In the 21st century there are significant challenges due to increased nurse patient ratio,high turnover,unfair labour practice, challenging population, mandatory overtime and complex technology-lead to burnout

Nurses spend one third of their lives at work, the working environment can have a significant impact on their health and wellbeing.

Increased attention is being paid to the creation of healthy work environments and positive workplace culture.

A healthy working environment is one in which there is not only an absence of harmful conditions that can cause injury and illness, but an abundance of health promoting ones (WHO, 2010).

A healthy workplace environment is ideal when it comes to maintaining a positive outcome in a stressful atmosphere.

Nurses need to feel valued, supported, and engaged

1.workplace culture

Way things are done ,includes shared structures,routines,rules,norms that guide behaviour

  • Exist everywhere and they are norms
  • Vision,mission,vision but not what goes on
  • It keeps on changing contributed by all interested parties-patients staff and organization Subcultures but overall is organization
  • We are what we repeatedly do- by aristotle

  • Healthcare workplace culture hinges more importantly on the deeper levels of culture that many leaders ignore
  • Not taking into consideration of human capital-nurses can be replaced
  • Not engaging and valueng nurses
  • Bullying, harassment, intimidation and discrimination are rampant enough in healthcare
  • Bullying occurs between nurses (also known as lateral or horizontal violence),

The healthcare workplace environment has a deep impact on staff experience, including satisfaction, productivity and institutional loyalty.

Patient satisfaction is indeed a powerful driver of 21st-century healthcare. Staff satisfaction should admittedly receive equal attention, but it sadly receives short shrift in many quarters.

Physical environment matters

Florence nightingale(environmental theory)-cleanliness,natural environment which enhanced healing.

environmental factors): provide a physical work environment that supports healthy choices and offers resources to actively encourage healthy behaviour (e.g. bike racks, car pack, and/or shower facilities ,changing rooms ,resting rooms)

Hospital environment noisy,smelling and unergonomic friendly,supplies are far,space inadequate and the flow not ideal

Nurses not involved in the initial design

involve nurses during deesign who understand the workflow so as have clean,well designed,functional ,attractive and humane environment

  • Employees are the best asset
  • Effort into employee wellness can encourage better teamwork
  • Increase productivity
  • Reduce sick leave and workplace accidents
  • Organise for fitness centres –aerobics,yoga

4.Supportive workplace environment

  • Everyone has personal problems
  • Human, that some emotions get into workplace
  • Do not ignore,find a cure
  • Be asupportive employer by showing concern
  • Be compassionate and be there for them
  • Doors should always be open

Creating a healthy work environment (HWE) enables nurses to provide the highest standards of compassionate patient care while being fulfilled at work

Balancing intelligent and emotional quotient

Succession planning and development

Address nurses burnout

Improve on physical environment light,noise,chemicals,ergonomics

  • Promote wellness-exercises before and after work,give them an opportunity to know one another,
  • Team building activities-bonds ,motivates and improve internal communication
  • Fair employee policy
  • Eat healthy-not skipping meals,healthy meals
  • Break time,-to relieve muscle fatique,eye strain,restore level of concentration
  • Clean and comfortable office
  • Lead by examples
