Scout Me In�

​

�The goal of the Heart of Virginia Council is for every eligible youth to have an opportunity to join Scouting.

Plan Overview (Goals)

• Plan and conduct a new member registration event for every Cub Scout Pack/school/community in the Arrohattoc District before October

​

• Expanded promotion of additional opportunities to join through follow-up opportunities in September and October like participation in Fall Carnival.

​

• Plan unit-level “Bring a Friend” campaign in November to encourage participation

Reasons For This Orientation…

• To provide consistent and proven tactics to Leaders in order to continue Cub Scout membership growth.

​

• To streamline the signup process for Scout Leaders…this helps to simplify signup night for new families

​

• To strategize with other packs in the District in order to provide multiple joining activities in each community throughout the fall.

• To continue to integrate parent-to-parent testimony into our program thus allowing existing members to become recruiters

​

Timeline

Encourage Year Round Recruiting (“It’s not just a Fall thing!”)

​

• January – May: Webelos to Scout Transition Planning
• June: Pack prepares program calendar, budget, & fact sheet featuring the Pack
• June – July: Council representative meets with school superintendents and Principals
• August – October: Fall Recruiting
• October – December: Membership renewal & Charter renewal

Organizing a�“Join Scout Night”

1) Picking the JSN Date

• The district executive should work with the membership team to determine the Join Scout Night dates for every elementary school in the District.
• Some things to consider:
1. Not on a pack meeting night
2. Not on Back to School Night (some packs find it helpful to have it a few days after Back to School Night so they can hand out flyers)
3. Early in September- the second week of school is ideal. If you wait until later in September
4. many children have already signed up for other activities
5. Flyers- if your school only sends flyers home on pre-determined dates, make sure that your
6. Join Scouting Night is a couple nights after the flyer date

2) Pack Program and Leadership Prep

When parents come to a Join Scout Night they are looking for a quality program.

Over the summer the pack leadership should develop their calendar, identify any gaps in leadership, and plan an outdoor activity for the pack within the first month after Join Scouting Night. (October)

3) BeAScout.org

• BeAScout.org is a website where prospective parents can find units within their neighborhoods.
• Each unit has a “unit pin” that can be updated with contact information and upcoming unit events.
• This website is being widely distributed on all promotional items (flyers, yard signs, posters, print advertising, television, radio, etc.
• It is imperative that packs ensure their information is current
