Problem Two: Misinformation about Food Macros

Inspiration

  • Both the problems we mentioned stem from the same issue – a lack of awareness about the food that we eat
    • Better information regarding the food that we eat would likely steer people towards healthier choices
    • Awareness of the carbon footprint of the food we consume would steer us towards more environmentally conscious behavior
  • We wanted to make a project that tackled both these issues, and that led us to creating GreenByte

What does it do?

  • We firmly believe that knowledge of nutritional and environmentally sustainable food choices is of utmost importance.
    • We wanted to create a platform that provided such knowledge in a free and convenient manner
    • By simply uploading pictures of the meals you eat, our app will give you a approximation of the nutritional contents as well as the carbon footprint behind the production of the food you chose.

How does it work?

  • Frontend: React + Typescript
  • Backend: Flask + Python
  • Database: Firebase
    • For leaderboard functionality
  • APIs:
    • Llama Model via Hugging Face Inference Client for image classification
    • Gemini API for calorie estimation and carbon footprint analysis

Future Features

We plan on adding the following features to upscale this project:

  • Mobile Support
  • We want to expand this app by making Touch optimized interactions for mobile use, as well as mobile friendly navigation
  • Social Network Feature
  • We would’ve loved to integrate a social network feature into our app where you can compete with your friends to see who can eat the healthiest.
  • Unfortunately, we simply just didn’t have enough time for such a feature.
