ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

4 of 49

I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians on the lands we are meeting today. The Gadigal Clan who stretched along the south side of Port Jackson from South Head to around Petersham and the Wangal People who occupied the area along the southern shore of the Parramatta River from around Petersham to Rosehill.

Our netball courts are built on Aboriginal Lands and Waters, and I would like to acknowledge the ancient and respected ground we play on.

I would like to pay my respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to Elders past and present and extend that respect to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people present with us today.

UMPIRE ALLOCATION

  • ALL teams are provided with an umpire
  • We aim to put the same umpire with your team each week.
  • Junior games (10-12 age groups), are used to train our new umpires. Please be kind to them, they are learning. Also note, their runner is not allowed to blow their whistle. It’s a rule!
  • Clubs share umpires to ensure all games are covered, so on the occasion your team is allocated an umpire from another Club, don’t panic, it’s normal.
  • Urgent concerns regarding yours or the other team’s umpire (ie concerns relating to umpire or game conduct) must be reported during the game. Please send someone to the IWNA window to ask for the Umpire Convenor.
  • Non-urgent questions/concerns about your allocated umpire may be addressed to our Umpire Coordinator after the game.

37 of 49

PRIOR TO

THE GAME

DURING THE GAME

  • Ensure the sideline is clear of bags, water bottles, pets, chairs, etc and for seated spectators, legs must away from sideline.
  • The baseline and corners must be free of spectators. You cannot watch the game from here.
  • Pacing the sideline by coaches or spectators is not allowed. The umpire will ask you to stop.
  • Coaches are encouraged to stand on the left hand goal third of the court (your umpire will be running the right hand centre and goal third.
  • Coaches and spectators are not to speak to the umpire during play. If your team has any questions, the team captain (player) may approach the umpire during the breaks
  • Umpire to arrive 5-10 minutes before the game starts to check uniforms, nails and jewellery.
  • Umpires are often coming from another game (they also play, coach and umpire other games) so please be patient!
  • Players must remove all bling (no taped earrings, no watches,no jewellery AT ALL)
  • Hair needs be tied back
  • Appropriate footwear must be worn by players (not converse, or street shoes)
  • No hard brimmed hats can be worn, only soft foam visors

NO UMPIRE… NEXT STEPS

On the unlikely occasion that your umpire does not show:

  • Provide a temporary umpire from your own team so the game can start at the buzzer. This person can be a reserve player, manager, spectator or coach.
  • Let the other umpire and opposing team’s coach/manager know your umpire is late/not there, and there may be a change in umpire, once the new/allocated person arrives.
  • Send someone to the office to advise. You will need to know the court number. They will place a call over the loudspeaker asking for help
  • Call Annie (0422 929 793) and let her know your umpire is not there.
  • We have a highly regarded and reliable umpire workforce and it is a pretty rare occurrence (and not without good reason!) that our umpires no show. It is more likely they are late.

39 of 49

BE NICE!

All umpires deserve your respect! Their job is hard. Commenting on their calls (or on what calls they didn’t make) is not helpful. You may think you’re quiet, but they hear everything! Our umpires are badged according to the framework from Netball Australia. We all follow World Netball rules with some ‘local rules’ applied by IWNA.

Umpires can deal with poor coach/spectator behaviour, in the following ways:

  • Hold play to speak with the offending spectator. There is no need to wait for quarter time
  • Ask an IWNA representative to step in, and if necessary, remove the offending person(s) from the sideline. This applies to everyone including coaches and managers
  • Contact Annie as Umpire Coordinator. Repeat offenders will be asked not to attend games.

Remember NO umpires = NO game!

NEW FOR 2025!

LWNC has NEW software for allocating umpires for 2025

  • Invitations to our umpires will be shared within the next 2 weeks - if you are an umpire, please keep an eye out for an email from “Refbook”
  • 2 x webinars will be held for training on how to use the system for all umpires (this will occur AFTER the fixture is released from IWNA (from 23 March)
  • Umpires will be able to advise their availability via the app, confirm their allocated games, and pick up new games!
  • System will interact with PlayHQ and the IWNA fixture will automatically upload.
  • Umpire payments can also be managed through the system
  • Umpire skill development, game history can also be tracked
