In the contexts of particularly refugee and displaced learners who often face trauma, identity loss, and cultural dislocation, the consideration of HP is critical.

It is about restoring dignity, agency, and mutual recognition through educational practices that foster reconciliation, shared vulnerability, and critical self-reflection.

This is perhaps a moment for all of us to reflect on our own teaching methods, identify dehumanizing practices, and adopt strategies that affirm the full humanity of our students.

Digital:

Emphasizes creating inclusive, engaging, and respectful digital spaces that uphold learners’ dignity and agency.

Key aspects include ensuring privacy and digital dignity, fostering critical digital engagement through inquiry and collaboration, and building meaningful dialogue spaces online. The lesson also addresses challenges such as accessibility, learner engagement, and the importance of feedback.

Narrative-based learning is grounded in several key constructs:

it emphasizes storytelling as a natural human process for meaning-making,
fosters empathy and mutual understanding,
supports critical thinking through analysis and interpretation of narratives,
and serves as a medium for cultural preservation and identity affirmation.

This approach is particularly impactful in displaced contexts, where learners benefit from safe, inclusive spaces to share and process their experiences.

A vital extension of this method is digital storytelling, which merges traditional narrative techniques with modern multimedia tools—such as audio, video, and images—to create engaging, multimodal learning experiences. Digital stories not only enhance student engagement and digital literacy but also validate learners' lived experiences, making education more relevant, dynamic, and empowering.

Digital Stories

Short, multimedia-rich narrative that combines traditional storytelling elements:

Here are 10 practical teaching activities designed for higher education learners in refugee and displaced contexts, specifically tailored for low-tech digital environments (e.g., mobile phones, basic internet access, messaging apps, or offline tools):

1. Audio-Based Storytelling
Students record short audio stories about their cultural backgrounds or experiences and share them via messaging platforms (e.g., WhatsApp, Telegram). These can be used to spark discussions on identity, migration, or resilience.

2. Collaborative Google Docs Journals
Create shared Google Docs where students contribute weekly reflections or cultural insights. This promotes peer learning and allows for asynchronous participation.

3. WhatsApp Discussion Circles
Use WhatsApp groups to facilitate weekly thematic discussions (e.g., traditions, education systems, gender roles) where students share perspectives and respond to peers.

4. Photo Voice Projects
Students take photos with their phones that represent aspects of their culture or daily life, then write short captions or reflections. These can be shared in a group chat or simple slideshow.

5. Culturally-Themed Micro-Podcasts
Students create 2–3 minute audio segments on topics like “A proverb from my culture” or “A traditional celebration.” These can be shared and discussed in class or online.
