The Renaissance was a time of major change in Western Europe; Wealth from trade made it possible to support artistic development; Artists were inspired by ancient Greek and Roman culture as well as religion; Leonardo da Vinci worked to paint his human subjects in a realistic way

Humanism and naturalism do not necessarily mean that art did not feature any religious imagery; they meant that the way that people and events were shown had a greater focus on human behavior
