Welcome to fourth grade! I had a great first week getting to know each other and beginning to build our classroom community. You can expect to receive monthly newsletters throughout the year, and I will send paper copies and post them on Seesaw! Speaking of Seesaw, it seems like most of you have been able to connect (Yahoo!). If you seem to be having problems doing so, please let me know, as we will be posting photos, reminders, and classwork activities via this app as a way to bridge school to home!

I hope you all have seen our new agendas! Thanks for taking time each night to go over things with your child and sign/initial to let us know you have seen it! I look forward to adding more details to this as the year progresses.

Reading: We will launch our love of literacy with a “Book Tasting” to create a list of “must reads” for the year. You will notice that students will be bringing books home from my library and JES for independent reading. Throughout September we will be reading “Fourth Grade Rats” by Jerry Spinelli and remembering skills in summarizing, characterization, and identifying themes. We will also use this novel study to be introduced to Signposts. Signposts are clues authors leave throughout a text to guide you to stop. think deeper and make connections as a reader! Look for examples of these on Seesaw in the next few weeks.

Writing: We will kick off the year with our first writing assignment to share “The Best Part of Me”. Throughout September we will spend time refreshing our learning brains with what makes a quality paragraph and working on building a foundation in 4th grade grammar skills. We will start spelling the week of the 26th, and you can expect to see spelling tests every other week.

Math: We start Fourth Grade off with multiplication! Throughout this unit of study we will really hone our skills around making comparisons in multiplication. For example you might hear someone say “Mr. Scarola is like two times bigger than Mr. Maestas!” The language in that sentence indicates a Multiplication problem could be used to find the answer. Recognizing the words twice, triple, and especially times as many might seem easy, but so often students want to jam numbers into an equation and end up multiplying when they should be dividing and vice versa. Slowing down and rereading problems will be really important!

Science: We will kick off this year in science talking about Geology. We will learn about landforms and how they change over time and rocks and minerals
