I’m from the land of 10,000 lakes, Minnesota it’s called.

It’s where summers are hot and winters are brutal

It’s a place where summer means 10,000 blood sucking mosquitos

And winter means frost bitten ears, fingers and toes.

I’m from Barcelona’s Messi and Man U’s Ibrahimovic.

A simple sport can lead to greatness I hope I can achieve.

“Play and enjoy the game,” my old coach Dan in San Diego said,

“if pro soccer is your destiny, it’s a future only you can make.”

I’m from where music is like a cage for capturing lots of positivity,

and music is a way to cheer me up

But music can also be funny with my Dad’s mumbles

of old love songs and 80’s pop.

I’m from online streaming where music and videos are always ready.

My favorite shows and songs can be accessed instantly.

My dad said they had to wait for days for episodes to get on T.V.

Nowadays, just a touch of a button makes it all easy.

I’m from being thankful for everything I have in my life.

From gadgets to clothes, and food on our table.

Because I know my Mom and Dad always works hard

to make our life a bit more comfortable.

I’m from making great memories out of this life,

Something I learned from my Grandpa Bob.

He might be gone but good memories with him i will have,

So with friends and family good times I always want to grab.

I am from fields of sheep and mountain ranges where the sky is always blue,

From crazy traffic and extravagant weddings too.

I’m from the guitars that lay stationary in the basement,

From the lousey house plant, the blossoming tulips I’ll always remember the rose like aroma they let out.

I’m from chocolate frogs and freshly baked cinnamon pretzels,

From do this to do that,

I’m from extravagant broadway shows to mysterious tv shows,

From Matilda to Camp Rock.

I’m from heavy thunderstorms and circular rainbows, which always told me that something good was going to happen.

I’m from guitar playing hippies to “I care about makeup more than anything” girly girls,

I wasn’t any of them though.

From my grandmother’s spicy chicken to my cousin’s dream fame,

I’m from reading and talking under the large, ancient banyan tree.

I’m from light snow falling on my nose, light as feathers to rain falling on my head, meaner than the neighbours old dog and,

From going on 1 am strolls to Target and Whataburger,

I am from “everything’s bigger in Texas” and sweet ice tea.

On my wall I see memories I took pictures of because I’m not ready to let go of them just yet.

I am from all those memories, I’ll never forget.

Where I'm From

-Keya Agrawal

I'm from greeting elders by standing up,

putting my hands together and bowing

I'm from wearing around knee length shorts,

with colourful t-shirts with sleeves

I'm from tying my hair in a ponytail when at home,

From praying to the gods that they take me to heaven, not hell-

I'm from going to the temple in a heavy long kurta every Sunday

eating salty rotis in rolls, every chattery lunch at school

I'm from playing the piano

for me and my family's ears to devour

I'm from listening to various trendy songs,

but definitely not a Belieber or a Swiftie

I'm from red and white stripes and the Dharma Chakra,

living all but two years of my life in Singapore,

I'm from accepting untrue blames of things my sister did

I'm from getting straight A's and working hard in Elementary

I'm from trying my best to work hard as I grow older,

But there are some things that will stay the same,

Age increasing I will have to get bolder,

Reaching to my aim.
