CUMULATIVE GPA

The numerical average of the points assigned to every high school credit course a student has taken.

    • Based on ALL classes the student has taken (core, electives, high school credit courses in middle school, etc.).
    • Advanced/ AP/ Honors courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale. All other courses are weighted on a 4.0 scale.
    • NOT used to determine rank.
    • Can be viewed in Naviance and update after each semester.
    • Appears on transcripts, sent to colleges.

Students must pass five end-of-course exams:

90% ATTENDANCE RULE

  • Semester credit will be withheld if a student exceeds 4 unexcused absences in any of their courses.
  • Students must attend before/ after school credit recovery sessions or tutoring to make up time

Course verifications will be emailed to your parents/ guardians. When they arrive, review the courses listed to ensure that they are correct and reach out to your Bowie counselor with any changes.

The FINAL day to make any changes to choice sheets is May 29th, 2025. We will not accept any change of mind requests after this date.

ADVANCED ACADEMICS

AP, ACC Dual-Credit, and UT OnRamps

Advanced Placement (AP)

  • Taught by Bowie teachers using College Board Curriculum
  • Option of taking the AP exam in May
  • Exam is graded 1-5; a grade of 3 or higher on an AP exam may award you college credit (determined by specific college)

ACC Dual-Credit

  • Taught by ACC professors either at Bowie or at an ACC campus
  • Students can earn both high school and college credit
  • ACC credit can transfer to in-state public colleges & universities and some out-of-state or private colleges & universities

UT OnRamps

  • Taught by Bowie teachers with special training from UT
  • Students can earn both high school and college credit
  • Assignments are graded by both the Bowie teacher and a UT professor (the grades may be different).
  • Unlike ACC Dual-Credit, students can choose whether or not they want their college grade placed on their college transcript

All are weighted on a 5.0 scale.

ADVANCED COURSE SUMMER WORK

Most advanced & AP courses have summer work that is due the first week of school.

Advanced & AP course summer work can be found on the Bowie website and is already posted.

LEVEL CHANGES

After the course change deadline, if a student wishes to drop down to the academic level of a course, they must remain in the advanced course for six weeks.

All level change requests will be reviewed by a committee of teachers, counselors, and administrators who will consider the following:

  • Student’s demonstrated commitment to their academic success (completing course assignments, attending FIT & tutoring).
  • Student’s academic history, preparedness for the course, and current performance in the course (Students with a six weeks average of 80% or higher are not eligible for a level change).
  • Available space in the academic level course

CCMR

To meet “college, career, or military readiness” a student must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Take and pass an industry based certification exam.
  • Take an pass an AP exam with a 3 or higher.
  • Complete and pass an ACC or UT OnRamps course.
  • Receive a passing score on the SAT or TSI.
    • SAT ELA- 480 and Math 530
    • TSI ELA- 945 w/ Essay 5 and Math 950

You will take the SAT March 4th. The next TSI retest date will be later this Spring.

ACC Dual-Credit Enrollment Process

  • There is an extensive enrollment process for students taking ACC dual-credit courses for the first time.
  • Step One- Attend January FIT session w/ Ms. Luna- Email Ms. Luna if you did not already attend
  • Step Two- Apply to ACC by March 17th
  • Step Three- Complete Online New Student Orientation
  • Step Four- Verify College Readiness Test Scores
  • Step Five- Submit Participation Google Form
    • Must complete steps 1-5 by March 21st

Seniors may request up to two off periods if they are on track to graduate and do not have any credits to recover.

Make sure you have already taken all required elective credits: 2 year of the same LOTE, 1 PE, 1 fine art, and health

Students that have not met CCMR cannot have off periods. They will be placed in a TSI prep course in its place until they pass the TSI.
