According to the Law of Ukraine "About the Nature Protected fund of Ukraine” biosphere reserves are nature protection and scientific-research organizations of international importance

  • Protection / conservation of natural ecosystems
  • Scientific research and monitoring
  • Ecological education
  • Ecotourism development
  • Implementation of sustainable development

Staff structure:

about 280 employees: �150 rangers, 30 scientists,�11 specialists on ecological education, 5 specialists on ecotourism and recreation, the rest are working for subsidiary services

Scientific research

  • Over the years of work, the reserve has organized dozens of international scientific and practical conferences and participated in the implementation of numerous international research projects
  • Conducting research and monitoring is organized and provided by scientific departments
  • Collection of basic field data is also performed by 12 field divisions of CBR

  • Scientific Research in CBR is carried out on the basis of the Regulations on scientific and scientific-technical activity of Nature and Biosphere Reserves and National Nature Parks
  • The main scientific topic and at the same time the form of the annual report is the "Chronicles of Nature"

Eco-educational work

  • Organization of ethno-festivals, thematic workshops, round-table meetings, etc.
  • Publication of the scientific-popular magazine "Green Carpathians", the regional newspaper “Newsletter of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve", information booklets, leaflets, flyers, post-cards, calendars and other printed materials
  • Network of visit centers: �3 ecological-educational and 4 information-tourist centers
  • The unique Museum of Mountain Ecology - with more than 5,000 visitors each year
  • About 50 ecological events every year: ecological lessons, competitions, quizzes, eco-demonstrations, eco-games, etc
  • More than 3,000 school youth involved in eco-education activities and events

Recreational and tourist activity

  • About 40 thousand visitors annually and the trend is growing steadily
  • Developed programs of various tourist activities and excursion tours
  • High attractiveness of the territory due to a big number of natural, historical and cultural values
  • Network of 20 ecotourism routes and 4 ecological trails, with a total length over 200 km

  • Well-developed recreational infrastructure: checkpoints; �places for rest, camping sites; �information centers and boards; �guest rooms, etc.

Economic activity in the context of sustainable development

  • Animal grazing within the reserve is done on highland pastures on an area of over �4,000 ha
  • In total, in the protected area are grazed about �400 individuals of cattle �and 6,000 sheep
  • About 30% of the CBR territory �is used to provide resource needs of local territorial communities
  • CBR provides in average 6,000 m³ of commercial timber and firewood to supply more than �700 households in the area of its activity

  • Haymaking and animal grazing still remain among the main types of traditional nature management in the Ukrainian Carpathians
  • In particular, hay is harvested on the total area of 240 ha

Cooperation with local communities

  • Developed Programs for socio-economic and cultural development for surrounding settlements
  • Established transition area of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve (CBR) of UNESCO type with a total area of ​​about 140,000 ha
  • There is a functioning Coordinating Board, which includes representatives of the administration of CBR, local authorities and self-administration bodies, leaders of local communities and public, NGOs, other key stakeholders
