A Little Doctrinal Mastery Explanation

  • Each week you can spotlight a Doctrinal Mastery passage and help your students get to know that passage better. This can be done regardless of if you have taught there in the scriptures yet.
  • To spotlight a scripture for the week, it takes about 5 minutes each day. I have the class recite the verse in unison each day (first slide). Then do one of the following on different days:
    • Ask the class why that verse is important and why it was chosen.
    • Share the mnemonic (second slide). See helps to sharing a mnemonic on the next slide. Don’t forget to look at the PPT notes. Great helps there.
    • Share the scripture study skill with the Doctrinal Mastery passage.
    • Share a scenario and have them discuss or roleplay with their partner (third slide).
    • Try to memorize the Doctrinal Mastery passage. (fourth slide)
    • A quote to encourage your students in their personal scripture study goal.
  • I have broken the Doctrinal Mastery Verses into the 4 terms like your students might experience in the school year and a quiz for each term and semester. Since there is no longer grades in seminary, you can make incentives to help motivate them to learn the key words and references. It also helps for those stakes the have scripture bowls later in the year. I have also included a lot of other helps so look clear through this document. ☺

  2. Use the notes in the PPT to help your students come up with the answers.
  3. Link the key words to an idea or image in the cartoon mnemonic
  4. Link the idea to the reference embedded in the cartoon mnemonic
  5. Practice with a friend, with them saying the key words, and you giving the reference
  6. Give hints from the mnemonic

Some Possible Uses:

  • Print out a copy for each pair. Have one quiz the other by saying the Scripture Phrase and the other giving the reference. Encourage them to give hints instead of the answers.
  • Print and cut out the 6 squares and write the reference on each back. Then have the 6 cards laying out between the two students. Give a clue and the first person to touch the correct card with that reference, gets that card. Person with the most cards wins.

Joseph Smith History 1:15-20

15 After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction.

16 But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.

17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!

Joseph Smith History 1:15-20

18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.

19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”

20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother, “I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.” It seems as though the adversary was aware, at a very early period of my life, that I was destined to prove a disturber and an annoyer of his kingdom; else why should the powers of darkness combine against me? Why the opposition and persecution that arose against me, almost in my infancy?

Your friend Brandon is a member of the Church who seems to have become disinterested with anything Church related. After noticing this for a few weeks, you bring it up in a private conversation with him. Brandon shares with you that he recently learned that Joseph Smith used four different firsthand accounts to describe his First Vision. He is concerned because he feels like some of the details in these accounts differ from one another. He now wonders if the First Vision happened at all. He asks, “How can I believe in Joseph Smith and the Restoration if there are different accounts of the First Vision?”

Howard W. Hunter, taught, “… It is better to have a set amount of time to give scriptural study each day than to have a set amount of chapters to read. Sometimes we find that the study of a single verse will occupy the whole time” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1979, 91–92; or Ensign, Nov. 1979, 64).

Diana and Clark are walking to school one morning when Clark turns to Diana and says, “We’ve been good friends for a long time, so don’t take this the wrong way, but why do you Mormons say you belong to the true church? Don’t you think it’s arrogant to say your religion is true and everyone else’s religion is false?” Diana feels surprised by this question and had not considered that saying the Church is true might imply that all other churches are false.

  • Discuss with your partner what you think is the intent of Clark’s comment to Diana. How would you summarize his feelings and beliefs?
  • Take a few minutes to role-play with your partner how you would respond to Clark’s concern if you were Diana.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson stated, “I see you sometimes reading a few verses, stopping to ponder them, carefully reading the verses again, and as you think about what they mean, praying for understanding, asking questions in your mind, waiting for spiritual impressions, and writing down the impressions and insights that come so you can remember and learn more. Studying in this way, you may not read a lot of chapters or verses… but you will be giving place in your heart for the word of God, and He will be speaking to you.

One of your friends from church comes to you one day because of some things she read on the internet. In an online discussion, people were talking about changes they want to see in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The people seemed to be frustrated with the Apostles and prophets because their views oppose those of many in the world and do not seem to change. This discussion seemed to include members of the Church and others who wanted to voice their opinions in order to pressure the leaders of the Church to make changes. 11 For I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory, with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years, and the wicked shall not stand.

15 And again, verily I say unto you, that whoso forbiddeth to marry is not ordained of God, for marriage is ordained of God unto man.

16 Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh, and all this that the earth might answer the end of its creation;

Slap-Jack

Before you can have effective scripture chasing, they first need to learn the references to the key words or clues. This game sharpens that skill. It will also help you see who is your fastest. There are many versions of this game. How I do it is I set a long row of tables and seat students on each side facing each other. How many depends on how many students you have. All student’s things (including scriptures) need to be put away far from the tables. They may use their bookmarks if they still need it.

One end is the top positions and the other is the bottom positions. There can be no seats not filled and only an even number of students can play at once. One paper (see handouts) is placed between each pair facing each other. Some key words are said by you and the first in the pair to touch that square with their index finger, wins. Do best of 3. Then the winner of the best of 3 goes ONE seat up (towards the top position) and the loser goes down ONE seat towards the bottom position. After each best of three, each student will have to move down or up. No one can remain sitting in the same place unless they won in the very top position or lost in the very bottom position. They may have to switch to the other side of the table if the chair next to them is filled. The first time can be confusing but once you have done it a couple of times, it’s easy.

The number or chairs and tables will naturally depend on the size of your class. You can also do it chasing in their scriptures instead of slapping the reference on the paper.
