Connecting directly to libraries from Google Search

Throughout this exploration period, OCLC’s focus has been on answering some key questions.

Can we re-establish libraries as central hubs in the global information network? Yes.

Linked data helps libraries connect collections with non-library resources and entities sourced across the global information network, allowing library users to explore the world beyond the book, to discover people, places, events, organizations, and concepts.

Embedding libraries in a user’s research journey

OCLC continues to provide visibility for library collections on search engines and popular websites where people typically begin their research. Through partnership with sites that include Wikipedia, Goodreads, Google Books and Google Scholar, the program provides convenient access to library resources – often to people who might nor have considered consulting a library for information. In recent years, we’ve seen more than 70 million visits to WorldCat.org through this program, with more than 10 million clicks from WorldCat.org to library websites. Libraries that maintain subscriptions to OCLC Cataloging and Metadata and FirstSearch/WorldCat Discovery benefit from OCLC’s web visibility program.

Partner services, some listed here, which push traffic to WorldCat.org, which in turn converts a high percentage of that traffic to libraries whose collections are represented in WorldCat.

In our web visibility program, most partner traffic connects to WorldCat.org, and then to the library website. This has been the case with our Google partnership for many years. Since April 2022, libraries participating in the initial release of our Direct Links program connect directly to items in the library catalog from Google Search.
