Definitions

Artificial Intelligence - a machine's ability to perform cognitive functions typically performed by humans (Siri, Alexa) - using computers to do things that typically require human intelligence

  • Can process large amounts of data with the goal of recognizing patterns, making decisions, and making adjustments

Chat GPT - a type of AI - Intelligent Chatbot designed for chat based interactions to generate human-like responses - uses a LOT of data to respond to prompts

What is a prompt?

  • Define who is asking and who the audience is
  • Be clear and specific
  • Avoid jargon and acronyms
  • Include step by step instructions
  • Determine format of output

Ways to Check for Student Use…Is it AI Generated?

  • Consider the language – not natural or common, bias
  • Inconsistencies of information
  • Lack of typos or grammatical errors
  • Inconsistent style or tone
  • Inaccurate citations
  • Outdated information – AI based off 2021 data
  • Ask students questions about their work
  • Require students to identify use
  • Detectors do NOT work – false accusations
  • Do NOT load student work to an AI generator to check for AI usage
