A zine is comprised of various kinds of text, images, and messages.

Zines can have text that is typed, handwritten, or cut out from newspapers or magazines.

Images are often hand drawn or collages.

  • Publish sketches, drawings, and mini-comics
  • Match recipes with whimsical illustrations

Getting Started...

Step 1: Brainstorm ideas for your zine.

Here are some possible ideas you can choose from:

  • Make a zine about a personal area of expertise, ie. An Expert’s Guide to…
  • Make a mini zine about your top 10 movies, candies, or books.
  • Make a zine about one your favorite hobbies.
  • Make a zine about a social issue
  • Make a zine about your heritage
  • Make a zine about photography
  • Make a zine about a favorite trip you took
  • Make a zine about your favorite music
  • Make a zine about a comic

Step 2:

Gather Supplies

You will need:

  • Plain printer paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil
  • Pen

Nice to have:

  • Stapler
  • Markers
  • Colored Pencils
  • Magazines/Other Images
  • Colorful paper

Step 3:

Create the blank zine canvas

Here is a link to a mini Zine template from Scholastic teacher blog along with instructions. This template does not require a stapler.

If you have stapler, you can make a simple booklet.

Fold a sheet of copy paper in half like a booklet. Continue to do this until you have the amount of pages you want. Stack the pages on top of each other. Then staple 3 times along the folded edges. Each sheet of copy paper gives you 4 pages of space.

Step 4:

Add You Content to your Zine

Design your cover

Add the content to each page. Make sure you proofread your material before you add it to the zine.

Add images, drawings, and word art to make page titles, words, or subtopics stand out.

Share Your Zine!

Traditionally, zines are circulated by making printer copies and sharing them within your group circles.

However you can make as many or as little copies as you want.

You scan and share it online or even create a zine using google slides.

There are even zine festivals.

The possibilities are endless!
