Follow-up activities

A follow-up activity should build on the purpose and the intended learning from the session and provide the students with opportunities to practise the strategies taught or reinforced. It is good practice to make students aware of the learning purpose.

Activities could include written-, oral-, or visual-language tasks related to the text, for example:

  • creating a chart, diagram, or poster to represent a key idea from the text visually;
  • creating a graphic organiser and using it to extract and analyse ideas or information from the text;
  • taking part in drama activities.
  • composing and drafting their own piece using the structure or language of the text;
  • reading more about the topic being investigated;
  • reading other texts by the same author;
  • exploring a tagged or cached Internet site for further information;

Don’t overcomplicate follow-up so that it takes up precious instructional time.

100% of their best reading learning time is with you (the teacher)

Are you maximising that time?
