In Killard our Curriculum framework consists of 3 Learning Pathways, where our Curriculum and learning environments are tailored to meet the needs and profile of our learners.

We are delighted that we have our well-established Post 16 Stand Alone Modular Unit.
It was officially opened in April 2022 and is a modern, bespoke, purpose-built
facility that we are delighted our Post-16 pupils will get to use.

Our Year 13 pupils will be working towards their Bronze Award this year.
They will complete 4 elements:
Our Year 14 pupils will be working towards elements of their Silver Award this year.
Our Year 15 pupils will build on learning and experiences from their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards to further develop independence, leadership and life skills. This will run alongside the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The CyberQuest Project provides a supportive and engaging learning experience that combines digital literacy, cybersecurity awareness, leadership development, and personal growth. Its flexible, trauma-informed approach helps remove barriers to participation, giving young people the opportunity to gain valuable skills, build confidence, and explore positive pathways for their future.
Young Enterprise: Teams
Team Programme is a practical, inclusive enterprise experience designed for young people with mild to moderate learning difficulties. By setting up and running their own business, students develop essential life skills, build confidence and prepare for the transition from education to employment or independent living. Every step is supported, but led by them.

Beehive Cafe (Tuesdays)
All pupils will participate in our own work experience opportunity back here in The Hive.
We established our Bee Hive Café in 2022. We take bookings from classes throughout the school who come over each Tuesday morning and our pupils get the opportunity to develop and use a wide range of work skills by participating in a range of activities such as:
These skills can be transferred and developed in Source Café at Elim
and on individual placement.
Group Work Experience
Elim Church, Bangor
We are delighted again this year that some pupils will be getting the opportunity
to travel each week (Thursdays) to gain work experience in both Source Coffee Shop
and in the Elim food bank.
The experience and skills our young people have gained over the last few years attending
this weekly placement has been fantastic. It has allowed them to work and interact
with adults at the Elim and also members of the public in a small group setting with
their peers. This group work experience provides a level of support and reassurance to
many of our young people as they take this huge step into the world of work.

Leisure for Life
Leisure for Life (Fridays)
Every Friday our pupils will participate in a range of Leisure activities at either;
Aurora Leisure Centre in Bangor, Blair Mayne Leisure Centre in Ards, at local sports facilities,
or in-house at Killard.
We want our young people not only to experience and benefit from physical exercise as part of our
Post 16 programme but also to give them the experience of what it is like to be a member of a
leisure centre and how you can access different activities / facilities in this setting.
Our pupils will experience a range of Leisure activities throughout the year including:
Pupils will also use the showering facilities each week at Aurora / Blair Mayne as part of the
Leisure for Life experience.
Pupils will travel by public transport to the Leisure Centres but can make their way home afterwards if
written permission is provided by a parent / guardian.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
Pupils may be eligible for EMA depending on household income and it is paid directly
into pupils’ bank accounts.
The payments fall into 2 categories:
1) An attendance allowance of £30 per week dependent on FULL attendance
(paid fortnightly).
2) A performance allowance of £100 (January & June) dependent on pupils meeting agreed
targets set by school.
All parents who think they may be eligible to apply for this for their son / daughter to go
directly to the scheme provider.
Pupils will sign agreed contracts ( one for attendance and one for performance)
EMA
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
Authorised absences from school are those agreed either in advance or in case
of an emergency or in case of illness.
In all situations all absences must be backed up with written confirmation from a
parent to ensure EMA payment is approved for that week. (Comms is fine)
Payment is processed each Friday, so school must be made aware of absences on
Friday mornings also.
Unauthorised absences: EMA will not be approved if more than 2 unauthorised absences
occur in a given week.
Year 14 and 15 pupils who received EMA last year do not need to re–apply unless
any personal circumstances have changed.

Healthy Break to be brought in to school.
Lunch: Pupils can either:
School dinners in the canteen / packed lunch / make or heat own lunch in the pupil kitchen
* sausage rolls / pot noodles / toasties / paninis / soup / sandwich.
Pupils do not have to go to the playground at break and lunch, they can enjoy social time
in the Common Room, out on the Post 16 picnic benches if they wish.
Travel Training / Leisure for Life – Packed lunch / Buy lunch / Snack box for Free School Meals
Mobile phones
Pupils can bring mobile phones / tablets to school each day. They will be locked in the classroom safe until the end of the day.
Pupils can bring their mobile phones on public transport travel training days, and can use it on the bus to listen to music. No pupil should be texting / contacting home / accessing social media / taking photographs / videos.
Phones can be taken to work experience but should only be used in accordance with the rules as laid out by the employers, and should not be used whilst doing jobs.
Pupils can bring their mobile phones to the leisure centres on Fridays, to listen to music while
participating in a range of fitness activities, when appropriate.
If pupils choose to bring their mobile phone with them to different elements of our Post
16 programme, school will not take responsibility for any loss or damage to any device.
