  • Unit 3: Railroad crossing, emergency procedures, Test 3
  • Unit 4: Student loading & discharging, Test 4
  • You MUST attend all classroom sessions to complete all SDE certification requirements.

General Orientation Items

Class Attire

As we will be working on, in and around the commercial vehicles, you will need to come prepared in appropriate attire.

  • No ripped, torn, loose clothing or skirts/dresses
  • Closed toe shoes with a heel strap (No sandals or flip-flops)
  • A Valid Driver License (CDL is not required yet)
  • A positive attitude

Definitions

  • School bus terminology:
    • Function: used on regular basis for carrying students to & from school or related events.

    • Structural Design: 11 or more passenger, meeting Federal Motor Carrier Safety Standards applicable to school buses.

CDL Requirements

  • 18 Years of Age
  • CLP – “P” passenger endorsement; “S” school bus endorsement; no air brake restrictions (check with your district)
  • If insulin dependent – Annually Required to (within 45 days):

- Complete form

- Take to your doctor

- Get DOT physical

- Submit to Service Oklahoma

CDL Requirements

  • Visual Acuity – 20/40 or better in each eye, or 20/40 or better in both eyes
  • State employees can have 20/60 in each eye as long as they don’t drive for any non-state employers.

Course Requirements

  • Attend all of the classroom sessions
  • Score 80% or better on each of the four tests
  • Complete 5 hours behind the wheel (BTW)

SDE Certification Requirement

  • Meet ALL classroom requirements
  • Successful completion of course requirements
  • Possess a valid CDL, and proper endorsements (P & S), appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Air brakes may be required)
  • Have not been convicted, plead guilty or nolo contendere to a felony during the past 10 years

SDE Certification Requirement

  • Has passed a DPS driving records check and within the preceding (3) years:
    • - Has not had a license suspended, revoked or withdrawn pursuant to the implied consent laws.
    • - DUI
    • - Has not been convicted or plead guilty to a violation of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by the consumption of alcohol

    • - Has not been convicted of any violation of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or being in actual physical control of a motor vehicle while impaired.
    • - Have not had (4) or more moving violations (excluding parking violations)

Certification Process

  • Complete the Entry Level Driver Training class & pass the 4 assessments with 80% or better
  • Complete New Bus Driver Classes & pass the 4 assessments with 80% or better.
  • Complete the driving instruction with a certified driver
  • Complete the BTW assessment with the Third Party Examiner or Service Oklahoma

Prior to Employment

Below lists the information your potential employer must gather before you can drive a public school bus:

- Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)

- Pass physical exam

- Pass drug screening

- Pass background check
