Building a Nightstand

  • Woods 1 Final Project

Step #1

  • Use the model in the shop to draw an isometric drawing and develop a cut list.
  • Cut list must be complete before you start cutting.

Step #2 Cutting Case Parts

  • Check with Mr. Gary and find the Correct ¾ plywood for the Cabinet case parts. Cut your parts on the table saw. This usually requires help from another student. Label and put your name on each part.
  • Check partial sheets and red cart before you cut from a full sheet.
  • (2) Sides
  • Top
  • Bottom

Step 3 Dados for Bottom

  • Cut the Dados in the cabinet sides on the dado saw. Use a scrap piece to test the width of the dado.
  • Dados should be 3/8” deep and ¾” wide placed 1 ¾” from the bottom of the cabinet sides. Use a push pad.

Step 4 Adding Pocket Holes

  • Cut (6) pocket holes on the same face of your sides. These will be used later to fasten your top and face frame to the cabinet.

Step 5 Cutting the Back

  • Fit the bottom in the dados on the sides. Line up front edges.
  • Measure width of back near the bottom shelf. Backs should be 6” tall and as wide as the inside width of your cabinet.
  • Cut 4 pocket holes on the back. (see Photo)

Step 6 Case Glue-up

  • Glue the dado joint for the bottom, and the butt joint for the back.
  • Use pocket hole screws for the back. (coarse thread)
  • Clamp the Dado joint in the front. (See Photo)
  • Check for square and be

sure front edges of

cabinet are Flush.

Step 7 Adding the top

  • Glue the pocket screw joint for adding the top.
  • The back should be flush and the top should be centered left to right on the base. (see photo)

Step 8 Face Frame

  • Watch Face Frame video.
  • Select Face frame stock, check with Mr. Gary before cutting any large boards.
  • No Plywood for face frames.

Face Frame Continued

  • Measure your cabinet and add face frame pieces to you cut list.
  • Pieces should be about 1 ½ “ wide at finished width.
  • 3/4” thickness
  • It’s better for your frame to be slightly oversized than under.

Face Frame Glue Up

  • Dry-fit your pieces on Cabinet Front and mark the location of the Rails on the Stiles.
  • Be sure they cover all plywood edges of the front of your case.

Face Frame Table

  • Lightly glue the end grain of the rails.
  • Place the good side on the stile against the table.
  • Clamp across the joint and through the table use a fine thread pocket screw to secure the joint.

Step 9 Case and Frame Assembly

  • Apply glue to plywood edge on the face.
  • Use a couple bar clamps to hold the frame in place and secure with fine thread pocket screws.

Building a Drawer

  • Grab an Ipad or use your smart phone and your project plan sheet.
  • Be sure to complete all steps indicated in the slideshow before you proceed to cut material.
  • Our drawers are always made out of ½” plywood sides and front and a ¾”plywood back.

Step 10 Cutting a Cabinet Door

  • Your Door should be the same width as your Drawer face.
  • Measure the cabinet opening height. Your door should be 1” taller and 1” wider than the opening.
  • We use ¾” plywood for doors.

Step 11 Hanging the Door

  • Get hinges from Mr. Gary.
  • Check sample cabinet.
  • Rabbet the door to fit the hinges and insert into cabinet opening.
  • Apply hinges to the door.
  • Align door and mount screws.
