Matthew 11-12; Luke 11“I Will Give You Rest”
Jesus Christ will give me rest as I rely on Him
Jesus Christ will give me rest as I rely on Him
SCRIPTURE
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
- Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus Christ will give me rest as I rely on Him
David A. Bednar
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
[B]earing a load is a necessary and essential part of the plan of happiness…A yoke is a wooden beam, normally used between a pair of oxen or other animals that enables them to pull together on a load. A yoke places animals side-by-side so they can move together in order to accomplish a task.
Consider the Lord’s uniquely individual invitation to “take my yoke upon you.”…the Savior is beckoning us to rely upon and pull together with Him, even though our best efforts are not equal to and cannot be compared with His. As we trust in and pull our load with Him during the journey of mortality, truly His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
- Elder David A. Bednar, “Bear Up Their Burdens with Ease,”General Conference, April 2014
Come Unto Jesus(Hymn Book #117)
MUSIC
1. Come unto Jesus, ye heavy laden,
Careworn and fainting, by sin oppressed.
He’ll safely guide you unto that haven
Where all who trust him may rest.
2. Come unto Jesus; He’ll ever heed you,
Though in the darkness you’ve gone astray.
His love will find you and gently lead you
From darkest night into day.
Text and music: Orson Pratt Huish, 1851–1932

3. Come unto Jesus; He’ll surely hear you,
If you in meekness plead for his love.
Oh, know you not that angels are near you
From brightest mansions above?
4. Come unto Jesus from ev’ry nation,
From ev’ry land and isle of the sea.
Unto the high and lowly in station,
Ever he calls, “Come to me.”
Jesus Christ will give me rest as I rely on Him
The Sabbath is a day to do good
The Sabbath is a day to do good
SCRIPTURE
10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
- Matthew 12:10-13
The Sabbath is a day to do good
James E. Faust
Former Member of the First Presidency
The Sabbath was referred to in the Old Testament days as a blessed and hallowed day, as a symbol of a perpetual covenant of faithfulness, as a holy convocation, as a day of spiritual celebration. Jesus reaffirmed the importance of the Sabbath day devotion, but he introduced a new spirit into this part of worship. Rather than observe the endless technicalities and prohibitions concerning what should and should not be done on the Lord’s day, he affirmed that it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath...He performed good deeds on the Sabbath, such as healing the man with palsy as well as the man with the paralyzed hand. So the divine mandate of Sabbath day observance in our day is now more of a manifestation of individual devotion and commitment rather than a requirement of civil law…Keeping the Sabbath day holy is much more than just physical rest. It involves spiritual renewal and worship.
- Elder James E. Faust, “The Lord’s Day,”General Conference, October 1991
Have I Done Any Good(Hymn Book #223)
MUSIC
1. Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made
someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.
Has anyone's burden been lighter today
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been
helped on their way?
When they needed my help was I there?
Text and music: Will L. Thompson, 1847-1909, alt.

2. There are chances for work all around just now,
Opportunities right in our way.
Do not let them pass by, saying,
"Sometime I'll try,"
But go and do something today.
'Tis noble of man to work and to give;
Love's labor has merit alone.
Only he who does something helps others to live.
To God each good work will be known.
Chorus:
Then wake up and do something more
Than dream of your mansion above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love.
The Sabbath is a day to do good
My words and actions reflect what is in my heart
My words and actions reflect what is in my heart
SCRIPTURE
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
- Matthew 12:34-37
My words and actions reflect what is in my heart
Ruth B. Wright
Former Member of the Primary General Presidency
A believer is someone who follows and knows the teachings of Christ not only in his mind but also in his heart and whose actions are a witness of that belief…We can live in such a way that people can look to us as their examples. To be a good example of a principle, we must not only understand it but we must live that principle. It should become such a part of our everyday living that without consciously thinking about it, the principle is reflected in the way we live…To be true examples of believers, we are first committed inwardly to the principle of Christ that our actions reflect.
- Sister Ruth B. Wright, “Be Thou an Example,”General Conference, October 1991
If the Savior Stood Beside Me(Children’s Friend )
MUSIC
1. If the Savior stood beside me, would I do the things I do?
Would I think of His commandments, and try harder to be true?
Would I follow His example? Would I live more righteously
if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?
2. If the Savior stood beside me, would I say the things I say?
Would my words be true and kind if He was never far away?
Would I try to share the gospel? Would I speak more rev’rently
if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?
3. He is always near me, though I do not see Him there,
And because He loves me dearly, I am in His watchful care.
So I’ll be the kind of person that I know I’d like to be
if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me.

4:21
Heavenly Father gives us good gifts
Heavenly Father gives us good gifts
SCRIPTURE
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
- Luke 11:9-13
Heavenly Father gives us good gifts
Dale G. Renlund
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
[E]ach of us has received gifts that we could not provide for ourselves, gifts from our Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, including redemption through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We have received life in this world; we will receive physical life in the hereafter, and eternal salvation and exaltation—if we choose it—all because of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Every time we use, benefit from, or even think of these gifts, we ought to consider the sacrifice, generosity, and compassion of the givers. Reverence for the givers does more than just make us grateful. Reflecting on Their gifts can and should transform us…We can be reverently joyful as we realize that without Jesus Christ, we are doomed, but with Him, we can receive the greatest gift Heavenly Father can give.
- Elder Dale G. Renlund, “Consider the Goodness and Greatness of God,”General Conference, April 2020
My Heavenly Father Loves Me(Children’s Songbook #228)
MUSIC
1. Whenever I hear the song of a bird
Or look at the blue, blue sky,
Whenever I feel the rain on my face
Or the wind as it rushes by,
Whenever I touch a velvet rose
Or walk by our lilac tree,
I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world
Heav’nly Father created for me.
Words and music: Clara W. McMaster, 1904–1997. © 1961 IRI. Arr. © 1989 IRI.
2. He gave me my eyes that I might see
The color of butterfly wings.
He gave me my ears that I might hear
The magical sound of things.
He gave me my life, my mind, my heart:
I thank him rev’rently
For all his creations, of which I’m a part.
Yes, I know Heav’nly Father loves me.

Be "full of light"
Be "full of light"
SCRIPTURE
33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.
- Luke 11:33-36
Be "full of light"
Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
If you open your mind and heart to receive the Light of Christ and humbly follow the Savior, you will receive more light. Line upon line, here a little and there a little, you will gather more light and truth into your souls until darkness has been banished from your life.
God will open your eyes. God will give you a new heart.
God’s love, light, and truth will cause dormant things to spring to life, and you will be reborn into a newness of life in Christ Jesus.
The Lord has promised, “If your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things.” This is the ultimate remedy for spiritual sickness. Darkness vanishes in the presence of light.
- President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Bearers of Heavenly Light,”General Conference, October 2017
The Still Small Voice(Children’s Songbook #106)
1. Through a still small voice, the Spirit speaks to me
To guide me, to save me from the evil I may see.
If I try to do what’s right, he will lead me thru the night,
Direct me, protect me, and give my soul his light.
Listen, listen. The Holy Ghost will whisper.
Listen, listen to the still small voice.

Be "full of light"
Both my actions and my heart must be pure
Both my actions and my heart must be pure
SCRIPTURE
37-38 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.
39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
- Luke 11:37-41
Both my actions and my heart must be pure
Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
On our journey as pilgrims on the path of glory, we know how easy it is to fall away. But just as minor deviations can draw us out of the Savior’s Way, so too can small and simple acts of realignment assuredly lead us back. When darkness creeps into our lives, as it often does, our daily restoration opens our hearts to heavenly light, which illuminates our souls, chasing away shadows, fears, and doubts…
“Rolling waters” cannot long “remain impure.” To keep our thoughts and actions pure, we have to keep rolling!... It is an ongoing process—one day at a time, one heart at a time… Do you want to change the shape of your life? Change the shape of your day. Do you want to change your day? Change this hour. Change what you think, feel, and do at this very moment.
- Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Daily Restoration,”General Conference, October 2021
I Will Walk with Jesus(Primary 2020 Theme Song)
MUSIC
1. Jesus walked in wisdom; Jesus grew in truth.
He showed love to God and man while in His youth.
Jesus wants to guide me. Jesus shows the way,
Calling me to come and walk with Him each day.
2. I can grow like Jesus. I will try each day,
Promising to walk His path and there to stay.
Standing by my Savior, safe within His care,
Step by step I’ll follow, and His love I’ll share.
3. I will trust in Jesus. I will hear His call.
He will never leave me, even when I fall.
Jesus gives me power, lifts and comforts me,
Helping me to live and grow eternally.
Words: Mary M. Dodge, about 1831–1905
Music: W. K. Bassford, 1839–1902

Chorus:
As I walk with Jesus to my home above,
He will bless me with His Spirit and fill me with His love,
Change my heart forever and help me clearly see.
I will walk with Jesus, and He will walk with me.
Both my actions and my heart must be pure
The End
I can keep the Sabbath day holy
I can keep the Sabbath day holy
SCRIPTURE
21-22 And it came to pass that he went through the cornfields on the Sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do thy disciples on the Sabbath day that which is not lawful?
23-24 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did when he had need and was an hungered, he and they who were with him? How he went into the house of God, in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shew bread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
25-27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Wherefore, the Sabbath was given unto man for a day of rest, and also that man should glorify God, and not that man should not eat; For the Son of Man made the Sabbath day; therefore, the Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath.
- Mark 2:21-27
