ENVIRONMENT
For greatest ease and highest contrast, manual images are taken against a stark white background. The Photo Booth environment is what is used to achieve this.

EFFECTS
It is important to enable these settings in “Effects”
Ambient occlusion helps provide contrast when colors occasionally have to be shown in the manuals. Anti-Aliasing smooths lines out nicely so they don’t appear pixelated. Other effects are not necessary.

FUSION SETTINGS
There are some important settings to adjust in Fusion360’s “Preferences” menu before starting.

ORTHO-WHAT?
Camera perspective is critical when making a “visual” manual. A “Perspective” view can look distorted and odd when trying to convey how things are put together. Because of that, the camera view is set to Orthographic.

NO BIFOCAL ZONE
We found that using images captured with a DPI of 300 allowed us the most flexibility when scaling shots. You may have to wrestle a bit with Fusion360 to achieve this. Choose a custom aspect ratio and change the “Inches” setting to “Pixels”. From there, you can change the DPI, and then change the aspect ratio again to the desired size. We recommend getting the focus object as large as possible in the viewfinder, then capture at 1280x1024 with a DPI of 300.
Be sure anti-aliasing is enabled and transparent background is disabled. Otherwise, shots will come out fuzzy or yellowed.

SHOWING MOTION
11
11
I LIKE TO MOVE IT, MOVE IT
Any time motion needs to be portrayed, don’t be afraid of using a 4px weighted arrow line or shape! Feel free to be creative. If something needs to roll or jog, curves can be applied to these lines or shapes to get it just right.
BETTER WITH FRIENDS
It is also a great idea to select multiple objects and use the “Create Group” feature to make some even more interesting shapes!

HIGHLIGHTS
When capturing an image for the manual, it's nice to highlight which components are being used in that particular step. To do this, you want to make sure you select the Component in Fusion 360 instead of the body. If you are highlighting the installation of a screw/ heatset/ bearing etc. Make sure to select the component that is being installed (bearing in this case), as well as the bore(s) it is going to be installed into.
Adding call-outs to the page is another nice way to help the reader to understand which component is being installed.

Typically, the component and installed part are shown in a matter that conveys how the component goes together, and is accompanied by an image showing the part installed. Call-outs are also in these steps, don’t forget to use them!

MINDBLOWING
When exploding components, try to explode them in such a way that parts of the assembly are not visibly intersecting. This will help give a clearer intention to the reader.

THE THIRD DIMENSION
When dimensions are critical, throw a couple lines into the mix, with some arrows to indicate the span of the dimension, and a text box of the intended dimension. Tolerance stackup is a real thing!

SUNDAY FIT
If you need to convey how tight or loose two objects need to mesh, or want to convey what exactly the reader should be looking at when doing this step, it helps to highlight faces of gear teeth, pulleys, belts, you name it. Only a few is really necessary, subtlety is key.
