PEER-CHECKING

When?

Use peer-checking when you are working with someone else and the work involves:

  • Critical steps which are irreversible actions
  • Comparisons of test data with acceptance criteria
  • Starting or concluding critical tasks
  • Identification of correct parts or components prior to maintenance activities

What?

Peer-checking is a practice where two workers check each other’s work, with an eye toward making sure each is performing the work correctly and safely.

Examples

  • An engineer calculates the wait time of a capacitor, and the peer checks the results by performing the calculation themselves
  • Peer-checking to confirm, through agreement, that a control, valve, switch, etc. is the correct one

Why?

The person observing or checking has a different perspective than the person performing the work - the observer can see hazards that may not be “visible” to the one engaged in work, who is task-focused.
