STUDENT SHOWCASE PCA SITE - MARCH 8, 2023

Design Criteria

Utility Bridge:

  • Purpose - Carries water across road to water tower
  • weight major concern - human labor, limited set-up time
    • Aluminum “ ” shape
  • Reviewed clearance and truck height
    • against MASSDOT standards

Water Tower:

  • Purpose - to support 6,000 gal. 20’ in the air
  • Checked columns against weight of water and lateral wind loads
  • Reviewed bracing requirements
  • Used aluminum for reduced weight
  • Designed potential anchor bolts

Concrete Foundation:

  • Purpose - to support solar panels on a hill
  • Made of rapid setting concrete
  • 4” diameter Sonotubes buried 3’ below grade
  • Supported loads with a combination of skin friction and end bearing
  • Buried to a depth to protect for frost heave

Tent Structures:

  • Purpose - Framing secures canvas outer layers and withstand loads

Residential Tent:

  • Purpose - Smaller tents (15 feet by 33 feet) house family units
  • Frame is made up of aluminum pipe cross sections and perimeter columns braced by steel cables
    • Aluminum has an ideal strength to weight ratio
    • Steel cables distribute force using tension
  • Internal walls use same cross sectional cable structure
  • Pitched roof
    • Deflects wind load and mitigates suction

Communal Tents

  • Purpose - Large tents (25 ft. by 40 ft.) provide spaces for large groups of people
  • U/Arch shaped frame
    • distributes internal load of larger and heavier frame
  • Interior columns
    • Perimeter columns cannot sustain the interior and exterior loads placed on the larger frame
  • Large doorway
    • Flap entrance allows large amount of people to enter and exits as well as provides ventilation
