Quick Guide for Students

When you first log on, it may ask you for a Site Code. If it does, type in SBCC
As you instructor for your username and pass word. We have to set it up for you.
(Because we are the ones setting it up, it is NOT the same as your sbcc pipeline username and pass word)
Hint:
Username → will probably be your first name, dot, your last name
Pass word → usually your last name
So, for example Tom Hanks’s username would be tom.hanks and his pass word would be hanks.
By “dot” we mean the period punctuation mark
The very first time you use Reading Plus,
you will get set up and then take a short appraisal test.
The videos explain what each section is about.
You can use headphones, if you want

Then you’ll do the 20-30 minute three-part mini-test
Part 1: Asks questions about your opinion of reading
Part 2: Tests your vocabulary.
Part 3: Tests reading comprehension and speed.
The videos in the program explain it all.
The assessment is just to get an idea of
where to start you in the program.
A few notes about the videos:
When the video is done, click on the green “Go on” button to go on to the next part of the assessment
You can also pause and replay the videos.
After you are done with the set up and appraisal, you can log into the program.
You can personalize this page, if you want.
After you click on Start or Lessons you will see this page.
Click on Reading to do the reading passages.
You can see how many you were assigned for the week. If you want more, ask your instructor.
When you click on Reading on the previous page, you’ll see this:
You can choose what type of story or passage you want to read.
The first few times, you will click the space bar to get to the next page of the story
You can also select the genre and whether to choose a fiction or nonfiction story
But after the program figures out your usual reading speed, you’ll do GUIDED reading passages, where a box highlights a few words and you read along.

At the end of the page, you will be asked a question:
If you get the question correct, you get a green square.
If you get it right on the second try (after they give you a hint), you get a yellow square.
Be sure to hit the “Re-Read” button if you aren’t sure and need to go back to the story
As you progress, you earn awards, and unlock next levels.

You not only check to make sure you know the meaning of the vocabulary word
You also have to show you know how to use it correctly in a sentence
If you are having trouble with the vocabulary word, they will explain it in more detail and give you examples.
You can also hear the word in English or in Spanish.
They show you different forms of the word, too.
Skills Tab
Click on Writing on the top menu bar to select a writing topic based on one of the stories you read.
The Writing exercise lets you read the entire story again if you want
It also gives you a writing prompt,
and a space to type your answer.
If you are on “Student Draft” and hit SAVE, you can go back to it the next time you log on
If you select “Teacher Review” and hit the SUBMIT button, it will get sent to your instructor who can then review it and make comments
After you hit, submit, your essay is in the instructor;s bin, so you can’t edit until you get it back
When the instructor sends you back the draft or comments, you’ll see a notification on the top menu bar.
You can also send comments and questions to your instructor, and your instructor can reply back.
